My 16/17 year old mare has start6ed to look a little stiff recently so I think it's time to try some supplements. I have just been to my local farmers store and bought some gold label glucosamine plus 5000. Anyone recommend it? Also, is there any problme feeding it long term. I also have a 15/16 year old mare still in full work, would it do any harm to start her on it now?

I know quite a few people who have their horses on that particular supplement, some of them have changed over to it from the much more expensive brands and have found it to be very effective, others have had to go back to the pricey stuff as it just didnt work for them.

Unless you have an absolute diagnosis of whats wrong ie bone, joint, muscle, tendon then you will have to play trial and error with different brands and ingredients.

Hi

I haven't used that particular product but I have used Glucosamine HCL and pure MSM for over two years now with good results and no side effects that I am aware of. You could also try high strength cod livery oil and super solvitax mobility. All are beneficial and as I say no side effects that I;ve heard of

I get my glucosime/condritin tablets from Natures Best (google them) £18 for 360 tablets give my arthritic mare 3 a day - i can highly recomend them (not horsey but fraction of the price)

My mum has had a few problems with her knees and she buys the glucosime tablets from natures best aswel.
she says she can deff tell the difference when shes not taken them.

I know my mum is not a horse

but glucosime works for her so its worth a try as its the same principle as joints in a horse

sorry.... my post is not very useful

Would def recommend glucosamine for any arthritic sufferers.
i am an osteopath and we have looked quite closely into the clinical trials that were done for humans the results were very positive and showed improved joint health. also speaking from experience i have rheumatoid arthrits and take them myself, i def noticed an improvement and will continue to take them forever. It is important to note that for best results you should take the combined supplement with MSM and chondroitin both of which are important for joint health and glucosamine action. Also omega 3 oil is beneficial more so than cod liver oil so thats worth considering. now i haven't looked into the equine research but suspect that as the results for humans was so positive would expect the euine to be similar. so far as i know there are no side effects for long term use. hope that helps.
