Glue on shoes - how well do they stay on? or Hoof boots better

I'm struggling to keep shoes on my horses front feet after he ripped his heart bars off about 6 weeks ago, along with a lot of hoof at the back of both feet.

I'm considering either hoof boots - though getting the sizing right is proving a nightmare with collapsed heels and half the hoof missing; or I've been advised to try glue on shoes. But how well do glue on shoes stay on? I have quite a boisterous horse who keeps running around and pulling his shoes off (despite overreach boots etc)- will he just do the same with glue on ones?

Has anybody got any ideas or experiances they can share?

Cheers

My horse was a regular shoe puller as she had very poor feet. She was doing more damage than good.

Tried glue on shoes and she still pulled them off! Plus I believe that they also need replacing slightly more regularly but could be wrong?

Used hoof boots and at least they gave her some protection while she got use to going barefoot. And as a bonus she couldn't pull them off and do damage to herself!!

Would recommend googling a suitable diet for a horse with poor feet as I recently also posted about my footy mare. She's so much better bare foot, and her feet have toughened up, but she still doesn't like stony surfaces too much. Low sugar and starch, and additional supplements such as biotin are the best way forward. Perhaps for a more immediate and short term help, also use a hoof hardener to support further, alongside diet?

This sounds EXACTLY like my horse

Big TB with poor feet, collapsed heels, brittle feet, always pulling shoes through 'playing' in the field... he had the same foot shod 3 times in two weeks... disaster.

I had glue on shoes on him last year and i definitely recommend them. helped to keep shoes on so mcuh better. I tried hoof boots, but with a horse that isnt quiet in the field they just come off so easily, especially with a poorly shaped heel

He also has aluminium bar shoes on front with no clips, has biotin (takes a while but definitely works!!) kevin bacon hoof oil on daily has helped too.. but the aluminium shoes have definitely helped

due to terrible feet, i gave him 4 months off with no shoes over winter, just turned out in a field, hes a 10yrd old showjumper TB so isnt the usual type to stay out, but he coped perfectly and his feet were so much better!

I did the same. My mare had about 3 months off to allow her feet to grow and to recover. She was out 24/7 during this time, and the break did her a world of good.

another one who has lightweight (half aluminium) shoes with no clips on the front. Also vet told me to pen mine horse so he couldn't play while the feet recover. Diet is definitely worth looking at.

My daughters lightweight games pony has just pulled a shoe off taking part of his hoof with it . The farrier has taken the other shoe off and he is now pootling around a paddock . We have decided to leave the shoes off for the moment but i think we need to get some boots to keep him more comfortable while his feet grow back a bit . He is the only one of mine with any shoes on and so I would far prefer that he stays barefoot. We are carefull with the sugar in his diet anyway but his feet just dont seem to be growing . He is on hay , bit of grass , balancer and Turmeric with linseed and pepper . He has got tiny feet and someone said that the Harry hall boots are good for that. We are right in the middle of the competition season so need to do the best we can for him . Any advice welcome

My farrier advised boots over glue on shoes when we had this discussion. Basically if hoof boots are going to come off due to over reaching or deep ground then glue on shoes probably would too and boots don't damage the foot when they come off. They also provide more support and comfort to the horse.

I kept mine in until her feet were comfortable enough to cope with being turned out bare (as it was winter and deep mud) then she just wore the boots for ground she found uncomfortable or long distances.

Boots will work out far cheaper and will allow your horse to grow the heel support he needs.

Taking my horses shoes off was the best thing I could have done and I would only shoe now if I wanted to stud and would always allow a break from shoes.

Ah the glue on shoe question !
I think that it very much depends on the horse tbh. i have an 18 hander who is wearing glue ons at the moment and im lucky to get 3 weeks out of them so far, theyve been on about 4 weeks and im now on my second set ! in the main i think its his weight that is the problem, he wont be getting another set if i cant get shoes on he'll be in big hoof boots and pads
