I have recently taken on a 15.2" ISH Mare on loan. The person that previously had her on loan decided to take off her hind shoes, for cost reasons. Unfortunately now my farrier cannot get hind shoes on her as there is not enough foot to nail.

I have now got her on biotin and also applying cornucrescine to the coronet band every other day. The hoof is growing - but very slowly. Probably doesnt help that we have not currently got any grass - roll on the spring!

I have bought some Boa Boots so that I can lightly hack her. I also turn her out in the field with these on when it is frosty, as the ground is currently rock hard. However, these do not seem to give her any grip behind when it is even slightly damp - and so as soon as it starts raining I am only going to be able to do a small amount of road work. I live on the south downs - which means slippery chalk on steep hills!

The yard owner has suggested researching 'glue on' shoes. Has any one got any experience of these? I have done a quick google search - and it appears as though there are various different manufacturers - and they require a farrier that has had previous knowledge with them to fit them. Also, I cannot find any indication of costs!

I have not yet discussed thse shoes with my farrier - although I should imagine that he has not used fitted them previously because he has not suggested them. (He suggested using the Boa Boots for Hacking.)

Any thoughts on these - or has any one used them?

Thanks in advance.

I have some experience of 'glue on' shoes, when my old boy was recoving from Laminitis, but they were not that successfull.

I would go for the Boa boots, if I were you

I used to have glue ons for my pony, fronts only after lami and farriers formula between them wrecked his hoof wall.

This was about 6/7 years ago and they cost £80.
They did the trick though, they gave his hooves time to recover and we did revert back to traditional shoes.

I use a shoe which can be glued on and glued and nailed on and can recommend it highly (I have it glued and nailed on). It's a polyurethane shoe with fantastic grip called the Epona shoe, i think it's also cheaper than the Imprint shoe.

Have a look at http://www.eponashoe.com/

I have a laminitic in Imprints atm.
So far so good, although from what I can see they don't have fantastic grip although he is on box rest so only really walks from his stable onto the yard and back again so only a few feet...
They cost £160 including fitting.

Forgot to say that the Epona's come in two different version, the normal ones and those with tungsten carbide tips which I use and give fantastic grip.

Deffo would change farriers if you're going to give the glueing a try.
My cousins horse had her shoes glued on as like your problem, she didnt have anything to nail to.
Think it cost £45 for a half set. Just normal shoes, with a special glue he made up. Hopefully you wouldnt need it for too long if the farrier shoes correctly and you'll be back to normal nail on ones in no time.
One thing is though, wont be good if your horse is out alot and the grounds soggy as the wet tends to work against the glue.

MissMillie that's interesting that you say that wet and glue don't go together, I've had no problems at all, even in muddy conditions. However I'm not sure what glue you used, my farrier uses Equibond which also flexes with the shoe.

I honestly couldnt tell you, my memorys awfull.
He always asked that the horse was in the night before to allow the hoof to dry out as well.
Possibly different type of glue i dont know

My horse has imprint sports on the front. They are £150 a pair and has new ones every 5 weeks. The insurance pay for them thank goodness. Fantastic shoes but very costly. You need a farrier that is experienced in fitting them.
