Has anyone had a goat as a companion for a horse? Was it a success, where did you get the goat from, and would you recommend goats as good companions? Are goats remotely handleable? (I have had a sheep as a companion for a TB before, but the sheep was very wild, even after several years!)

I have a rather anxious 5 yr old mare that is proving to need a field companion. She has a mirror in her stable which she loves, but need to find a solution for when she is in the field....

On her own she jumps out, with the other horse she gallops and comes in covered with scrapes (and gets very clingy), and the pony is on a starvation patch (anti laminitis) so that is no good either!

I want to be able to turn her out overnight while the flies are bad, but this morning had to retrieve her from four fields away. We are on a farm, so can deal with any goat related defra paperwork...!

We used to have a goat at the racing yard I worked with for a particularly hysterical gelding. They got on fine and shared a field and a stable.
Scrammy (the goat) was an absolute dude and very tame. This was years back so guess Defra laws have tightened up tremendously but she even used to come racing with him which always raised a few eyebrows when they came off of the box together.
