I'm really nervous about letting my boy out after a weeks box rest. Was thinking I could sedate him and not feed him so hopefully he'll be more interested in munching but I'm so scared he'll just loon around and undo all the rest.

Would love to hear what you guys have done to minimise damage...

My boy has been on Box rest since July!!! He is being a pain in the bum to walk in hand - even though he is the most passive horse ever. I just think that as long as the area isn't too large to gallop in but not too small to have to twist and turn then they should be ok. Whatever happens there will be an explosion but after the initial buck and canter I think they'll more than likely settle down.

I feel sedating will only put off the explosion to another day. Saying that - my heart will be in my mouth when he finally gets to go out!! Good luck!

A week's box rest is nothing! If you are worried, I would just section off a small pen and pop him in there for the first couple of days, unfortunatly, if they are going to go loopy there is nothing you can do. I just booted my boy up, sectioned off a little square, put some hay in there to occupy him and left him to it.

Lord how have you coped since July...I've found one week traumatic enough. Yeah I guess there is no way I can stop him. Good luck when you do it too

My lad had 6 mnths box rest due to a tendon injury and when he could be turned back out I was nervous as hell, so know how you are feeling!
I was lucky that he was turned back out in the summer, so the ground was dry. In the lead up to it I hand grazed him for an hour a day, and then on the day, took him into a paddock with a quiet companion, and did the same. When I finally released him there was an initial explosion of 'yippe - I'm free', which his companion helpfully ignored, and settled to grazing within about 1/2 hour.
Good Luck!

My boy went out on sat after 3 months box rest, i gave him 30 ACP tablets but he still went mad, and he doesnt look too good again now

MY lad had three months box rest, first turn out was in depths of wint,er he had a paddock just the size of two small stables made using electric tape and fencing in his usual paddock with his buddies turned out either side. He also had a little (1ml) sedaline gel 1 hour before turning out.
He was fine with this and we did this daily and then gradully increased his paddock size and he's now in his normal full sized paddock.
We did and still do put over reach boots on and tape his front shoes on to be sure he doesn't return to his old habit of pulling them off as that would take us back to where we started.

He is only 4 and luckily he has been an absolute gem -he's full ID so he's really only interested in eating and sleeping and getting some attention (human) rather than the horses.

We have started on the in hand walking and he is now being a git but we are going back to the vets mid March to see if he can start exercise and hopefully go out!! Days just go into weeks, then months lol! Mind you if it was my other one he would have been pts by now or I would have had to turn him out as he is a fruitloop staying in!

My 31 year old is the same, had to sedate him after being in for 3 weeks for snow recently, if you're worried, give him some sedalin or acp pills, they just take the edge off

Have you got a small paddock or something he can go in first? Mine was box rested for 8 weeks last winter, when it came to putting him out (because he was going ballistic if I tried to walk him in hand), vet told me to bandage his legs, sedate him - I picked up a tube of sedazine from the clinic - and put him in a small area for a couple of hours.

He spent 5 minutes bouncing around then spent the next 2 hours just wandered about looking at things

My mare has been on box rest for nearly 11 months now after a tendon injury. Shes just coming back into work now and the hacking out is helping her. She wont go out until around May when the fields have dried up and shes back in the Summer fields so Im hoping the grass will distract her. Her legs will be as strong as they can be so hopefully minimal damage if she runs about. Be fun getting her to the field after the first day - when she knows where shes going!!!
