Quick question - I have a friend who has ridden a little and would like to come out for a sedate walking hack in the forest. I've got a old polo pony who is quiet and would do fine but it would be nice I could ride from my other horse with the polo pony on a lead rein. Is this feasible or is it asking for trouble? I doubt we'd get out of walk, it would just be nice to go out of a very quiet hack.

Try it first without the rider. One of my horses is fine being led, other not. They are both quiet. Often take my niece out on Dartmoor on lead rein.

I use to ride with my son on a lead rope and we would walk trot and canter with no difficultys.
You need to make sure that your horse doesn't mind having another so close behind.

As others have suggested - try riding / leading before your friend gets on.

I am now off to go hacking with my son and we do ride / lead.

We ride double on the roads but when going up narrow bridle paths his pony automatically drops back and tucks in behind my pony.

Son says it's the ultimate in 'tail gating' :D
