am i going to terrify myself?... any tips?
I am perfectly confident riding my horse and happy to go for a really fast canter, but have never galloped before. is the transition going to shock me?
I have an experienced friend who will come with me, and my boy is sensible and very responsive.
any thoughts much appreciated!

If you can canter and stop in an open space then I'm sure you can gallop and stop in an open space. Lucky you - I would love to be out enjoying the spring sunshine on horseback - instead I'm stuck at uni in Sheffield...

don't think about it too much!
just think of it as a fast canter......

I don't, as a rule, like to go fast, but in the woods one time (on pony!) the horses just realised it was a different place and not with clients.......
they just took off! My pony, soon as she saw a bend uphill put her foot down.. it was funny and fun but not something I do too much!

great, thanks.
i suppose it is one of those things you shouldn't think about too much and just go with it.
eeek. exciting though, just need to bite the bullet i think and try it out.
i know i can pull him up if needs be.

Dont fight the horse at the start, let him go and have his head before taking back any rein. If your going to let him go then really let him go.

I LOVE galloping ( its my fav past time hehe ) my tb doesnt half shift and can spook at really hight speeds so i have to be ready for a sideways movement but i do love to let her go.

They love it as much as we do just make sure you have enought space to really go for it and to slow down and cirle if you think your horse might be a bit iffy to stop.

Oh and put a neck strap of for your secuity if you need a bit nervious.

It's the best feeling in the world.

Remember my first one very well, there were 3 of us and we did one of the 2hr to 3hr hacks in an hour

just be careful your horse doesnt spook at anything and that you can stop!!

me and a mate were galloping and we didnt realise there was some white plastic stuff on the ground and it flapped and my mare lept sideways but i managed to stay on (somehow!!)

most of all just enjoy it!!

Can I ask what breed your horse is? If Arab/TB/certain warmbloods then I'd be suprised if you haven't already had a good gallop! lol

First time I galloped in 15 years was last summer - I let him go and nearly fell out the back door! He was so quick but what a buzz. Just make sure you're in a nice foward position so that if your horsey does go like red rum you'll be in the perfect position to handle it......my friend nearly wet herself as he kept slowly then going into warp speed - god knows how I stayed on.

Unfortunately it's an addictive pastime - I wouldn't think too much about it - just enjoy.

Top tip is not to fight them at the start - let them go then you have a better chance of bringing back! xx

I always find that if we've been doing alot of schooling etc, a good gallop always clears the horses cobwebs (and yours).

Although I tend to like to justify it to myself! haa ha
