The farmer where i keep the horse ...has this year only been able to make large bale hay... i asked him this morning how much & he was going to come back to me with a price as he wasnt sure!
I was paying £3 for a small bale last year.
My question is how many small bales do you get in a big bale?
How much are you paying for a big bale?
We are in the southwest & it is lovely quality.
Thanks in advance.x

I pay £25 for a big rectangular bale, much easier to use than round ones, I would say it is equal to at least 10 small bales which is a saving for me. Also in south west and it is delivered FOC.

been a while since I've had to get my own hay in as been lucky on last couple of yards to have it included in the price but last time I switched between small and big the small was around £4 a bale and the big £25-£30, think there was somewhere around 10 small bales worth in a big one - it certainly worked out much cheaper!

It depends on how big the bale is. I have had 10ft hestons that were about 10-12 small bales and 14ft hestons that weighed over 750kg! Paid anywhere between £25 and £45 for a bale.

Ask him how much they weigh. A small bale is about 25kg. I've had 10ft bales that weighed about 250kg and 2 people could move them (a short distance pushed through barn door) and 10ft bales that needed a 3rd person as weighed closer to 400kg. Or the massive 750kg bales that we spiked with the tractor to move ;)

I paid £4 for small bales last year.
This year we've bought in some round bales at £25 each, but with delivery it became £30 each.
They are HUUGEEEE, bigger then round bales Ive had before!
Dont know how many bales its equivalent to though

Thankyou all...thats great.I think these are probably the 10ft heston bales & they are packed in bloody tight....so hopefuly no more than £30 a bale.thanks again.xx

Zoon..thanks... i will ask him tomorrow....he spikes them with a tractor to get them down & puts onto a small push along trailer to get them through the stable doors. They do seem huge but i dont think they are the bigger ones!.I would love it to work out a little cheaper this winter ...he is very good to me so hopefuly not too expensive!

I have gone from small bales at £5-£7 each and average size (not heavy) to round bales which are good 4ft across and packed tight and heavy. I paid £40 delivered and put in the barn for me. I think they will work out cheaper but the only thing i will say is I had a smaller haylage net that was rectangle shaped you could put slices in. I had to get a new haylage net which was longer so i can get more in it as you need to put it in loose off the bale. I will also weigh it to ensure i am feeding the same. seems good though and cheaper. I will be making up several haynets on a sunday pm to have ready during the week.

Scribble thankyou....i am going to have to weigh too i think as i seem to be getting through it rather quickly! It is lovely stuff too & she'll be as fat as a house if im not to careful! Hope it works out cheaper for you too.x

I think big bale hay is nicer, we make round ones which suit me but square ones are easier really if you are limited for space. The hay seems less messed around and nicer. Our round ones are about 10 small I think.
