ok, current situation - I have a little car with bloomin awful economy when comparing it to other cars in it's class (I scrape 40mpg, when others can do 60-70). I have a B licence and don't want to do my B+E if I can help it. I have an old Rice Europa trailer that is having a bit of a facelift - I think the unladen weight is about 750kg and am thinking of getting it downplated to 1400 MAM so I can tow it and my single lightweight horse on a B licence. I have done a couple of posts about this and am still as confused as ever! I am looking for a vehicle with these specs (thanks ROG!) -

Maximum GVW 2100
Minimum Kerb 1400
Towing capacity at least 1400 (so the full trailer MAM of 1400 can be used)

And I have been given this website to help with the search - http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/kerbweights.htm

But I am confused about GVW - I am thinking this is the weight of vehicle with all contents, but excluding any trailer???? (this is what Wikipedia told me ;) ) Also, the helpful website doesn't seem to tell me GVW unless it has another name! Plus I'd need to trawl through every single car on that website to write my list of possibilities - and don't have time for it!

So found this website - http://www.towinghorsetrailers.co.uk/towing_vehicles.htm
But don't sure what vehicles it gives me would be legal for B licence towing - again seems like a very long process to go through them all to check.

So looking for a vehicle with above specs with economy better than 40mpg (it'll be used for my everyday car and towing once or twice a month). And I need a quicker way to write my shortlist! Any more helpful websites? As do not have a single car so far in mind! I guess if I know roughly what type for vehicle I am looking for, I can go through all the similar cars and check their stats, so any starting points for me?

Very confused!

You can't do it.

The rice is around 850 kg unladen so at most you could fit a small show hack to get in under 1400kg.

Remember it isn't just the horse it is everything you carry.
Try the second link out - it lists a lot of vehicles and has a lot of sensible advice.

Ours is a Mitsubishi lancer estate which we had converted to lpg so although on paper it only does 40mpg lpg is only 66p a litre compared to 136 for diesel so it effectively doubles the equivalent mpg. Our car only tow 1200 safely but trailer is only 705kg and pony 390kg so still leeway for us.

Wiki have it spot on - it can also be called MAM

I know nowt about mpg or prices etc but these might be worth considering

Toyota Rav 4 (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1425
GVW = 1785
Max towing weight = 1500
Max trailer plated MAM = 1425 kgs

Nissan X trail (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1515
GVW = 2050
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs

Kia Sportage (AWD) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1678
GVW = 2140
Towing = 1600
Max trailer plated MAM = 1360 kgs

FREELANDER 1 (2001 - 2005)
Unladen/kerb = 1500
GVW = 2040
Towing = 1800
Max trailer plated MAM = 1460 kgs

SUBARU FORRESTER (4X4)
Unladen/kerb = 1465 minimum
GVW = 2050 maximum
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs

Skoda Yeti (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Kerb = 1530
GVW = 2070
Towing capacity = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1430 kgs

Deduct trailer unladen weight from max trailer plated weight to get maximum load/horse weight for the trailer
Example:- Nissan (1450) minus IFOR HB401 (770) = load/horse 680 kgs

Contact trailer manufacturer to have trailer downplated if needed (free or very little cost)
Richardson Rice trailers are still trading so they may be able to assist with downplating if you have the serial number of your rice trailer

You can do it :D

1400 minus 850 = 550 so it can take a 500 horse and put tack etc in the vehicle :)

Difficult one and think you will need to trawl through things and then double check you are correct with someone else like ROG on here.

Suspect it would easier and maybe cheaper in the long run to sit your B+E test as to be honest it is safer and easier to tow with a car/4x4 with decent kerb weight

Just realised cross posted with the every helpful ROG!
