So how much do I pay somebody for looking after my horse for the week over xmas. The teenager lives next to where my horse's field is all she needs to do is feed, hay, check water and him, she does not need to wait 4 him to eat it or anything its going to take 15 mins max, twice a day. I have not told her that she needs to do him at specific times, just before 10 and after 4. I live in the South if that makes a difference.

My head tells me £5.00 per day but my heart would allow me to pay up to £10.00 per day purely for the peace of mind,. You could go down the minimum wage line and pay by that but I would feel that I couldn't ask again as, at the end of the day, she is doing you a favour as she happens to live nearby- You would have to pay a lot more if someone had to travel

I used to get £100 a week for doing it 'live in' and they were fed and muck picked so I guess a tenner or so a day as it's over Xmas.

Well I had mentioned £5 per day in an email and she got back to me and asked if that was per time or per day so now I am like does she expect £5 per time like I said it should only take her 15 minutes max per time so 30 mins a day.

Maybe I should get back to her and tell her I will pay her £10 per hour and that it really should not take her longer than 15 minutes from the moment she steps out of her door. Or maybe I should pay her £10 per day and make her get him in change his rugs and pick his feet out every day, which is what I do but not essentail and I just wanted to make her life easier too as she is looking after another ladies horse (but thats much higher maintenance).

I would expect £10 per day to do it. I do a little bit of freelance and I charge more for shorter trips like yours.

It wont take much time from her day, but it is time over xmas that she could be doing something else.

i would give her maybe £5 a day, she doesnt need to do much and then maybe get her a box of choccy or something, i would happily go check a horse throw some hay for £5 if it was in walking distance or on my way to or from some where i am working

I'm about to take over the care of a pony while the owner is away. I will be Checking the horse, feeding hay twice a day and hard feed once. Filling his water and poo picking the field every other day. My charges work out at about £5 a day.

I breakdown my charges into sections.
£1 each time to feed hay and or hard feed (extra 50p to check the horse over once a day).

£5 to poo pick and fill water.

I would personally pay her a set amount for the week, Christmas is a "family time" so you do have to take into consideration of her time spent there and the fact she is doing you horse so you can go away. £35 for the week over Christmas (@£5 per day weekly) to me does not seem much money to include Christmas day & Boxing Day. I would maybe suggest £50 for the week, but to be honest £10 per day (£70) doesnt seem a lot in the grand scheme of things. If it was her "normal" job then fair enough but she is doing a favour by being there.

i would pay £10 per day. Its not really the time spent there its the fact that you are so restricted in what you can do around that with your own family. i went to oz for three weeks and paid a friend £250 for the three weeks this was for one feed a day . the farmer was there to ring her if there was any mishaps. I felt that this was generous but that i could leave the boys knowing that my friend was nt going to feel used.

Blimey I think I am a little under paid I feed, hay out in the field turnout check water, muck 3 stables out in the morning & hay, feed, change rugs if needed, water at night total if stables are disgusting 2 usually are 2 - 2 1/2 hours per day also have to take wheelbarrow across boggy mess to muck heap miles away all for a grand total of £10 per day & there was not going to be an increase on that over christmas!

Not wanting to hijack the thread but how much would you be charging. Have to drive about 1 mile out of my way.

I do similar things for people in Essex, and generally work on £10 a day for what you mentioned (unless i have to travel too far) but if there is more than one I'm nice and discount for more horses.

Whilst I was having chemo, over the summer, I had another livery on the yard in the evening give my two a feed, she just needed to damp down, quick spray of fly spray, top up water if needed, and poo pick one barrow - about 30 mins max and I paid her £5 a day. When I needed to have their feet painted with hoof dressing and a bag of hay chucked in, I added another £1 for the extra work. She was happy with that, as her horse is in the field immediately next to mine.

I then paid the YO £3 to give a morning feed, spray them and check water and take off and replace fly masks after checking their faces.

I would go with £5 a day and £15 for Christmas day and £10 for boxing day for the work you are wanting done if the feeds are made up apart from any water etc needing to be added last minute and have the hay in nets or bags ready to go in the field. If she has to do this, add another £1.
