I need some advice please!

I have a 2 1/2 yr old lab that I would love to take picking up out on a shoot, the problem is I have no idea how to go about this. He has completed his gundog tests 1&2 and has picked up game during training sessions but that ended during the summer as my trainer moved from the area and so I have no contacts so to speak, I have no idea how I would go about joining a shoot with my dog. Obviously we would be beginners but having had training he would have an idea, I just really want to put our practice into reality! Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have no desire to shoot myself, I just really want to work my dog, my husband on the other hand might be up for it if that would be a way to take the dog too! Apologies for sounding so clueless.....

cheers :)

It can be hard to get invites, but I found out where the local shoots were and spoke to nearby farmers who introduced me to gamekeepers and so on...

It sounds as though your dog has a good grasp of the basics and would be an asset to a low key shoot for starters. I tend to beat more than pick up but on 2 of my shoots, they allow beaters dogs to help pick up if it's been a particularly 'busy' drive :)

where in the country are you?

Thanks very much for replying. I'm in Fife Scotland at the moment but moving to North Yorks in April next yr although I take it the season will be over by then?

So my best bet is to try and speak with a few farmers or try and contact local shoots and ask if I could come along? Having never done i before I really don't know what the etiquette for introducing myself/asking if I could come along etc would be!

If anyone is from my area and could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it :)
