Decided I'm going to get another welsh sec A pony, as think Spooks is going to e very profitable, and tbh with being stuck not working with this stupid leg, I need the money. So I could wait till next spring and go back to the stud where I got Spooks from, but being impatient I don't want to wait. So was thinking of trying the sales, but having never been and bought from a sale before I have no idea what to expect. Thought I would go on Friday and just have a nosy, and not buy anything, and then will be all prepared for the next one in a months time.

So, what sort of price should I expect to pay for a 3yr old Welsh A at a sale? And any tips going spare?

Thanks

Edited to correct typo

Be warned - a lot of horses/ponies get sold outside the ring! I bought one from Cambridge because I felt sorry for it - I know, totally the wrong thing to do

. Lovely mare, but turned out she was blind in one eye, cataract in the other and lame in all four legs

Once the painkillers wore off, she certainly wasn't as described!

Agree, I would be extremely wary of buying anything from Cambridge sales.

The trouble with a sale like Cambridge is that everyone knows each other - if you start bidding, some one else is likely to bid the price up as you are a stranger. In my case, I got someone else who goes there a lot to do the bidding for me - but I still got ripped off

but I only have myself to blame as I let my heart rule my head. Now I am banned from going to sales

Yep! Especially if it is nicely bred. From what I have heard horses end up at Cambridge sales for a reason - there are other sales where horses make better money where most decent and honest horses will be sold. It depends on what you want i.e. do you want with good bloodlines etc, if you do then Brightwells sales for welshies would be better - although you will have to shell out more cash.
This is only my opinion though, I am sure people have been lucky with horses from Cambridge sales, it just wouldn't be my first choice.

Sorry I didn't mean to be all doom and gloom!!

It may be worth a trip to look at the quality of youngstock going through to make up your mind. I only know people that have bought riding horses from there (with little success) or heard of dealers shipping their dangerous and unsellable horses to Cambridge.
Perhaps some of the breeders will be having a clear out of youngstock (some of them do) so may be worth checking out the welsh pony and cob society. Good luck!

You will to travel to Wales? plenty of studs who are getting rid of 3/2yr old colts, usually wild

go for about £100/£200

Hi MH,
Leominster sales are the best for Welshies. I brought Max from there for £150 as a yearling. He was a rig, but no bother to me as my vet sees them as a challenge and charges me less!
There are usually up to about 30 Welshies there. Some well bred ones, most are correct - if a little wild!
If you fancy a trip down you can sleep in my shed.

hi
i agree with peoples opinions on cambridge BUT i did get a bargain pony from there.
Brought him outside the ring as a backed 3yr old. He was a registered bay welsh section b and was gorgeous.
He was a bargain because a kid got on him, pulled too hard and he reared up and went over - in the car park.
not ideal i know, but one look at his mouth told all i needed to know.
I let him finish teething, removed his very large wolf teeth and re broke him.
He now belongs to a pony clubbing 12yr old, who is on the mounted games teams, does junior bsja on him and decks eberyone at local level showing. I sold him for £3000 to these people.
I brought him for £115.
Just be careful, try not to feel too sorry for any of them and im sure you will find something.
Good luck

i wouldn't waste your money at cambridge, most people will only offload crap there, sounds harsh but true. you will do far better to wait until hay - on - wye, some good ponies going through there for £100 - £150, they are brought to sell so don't have the high reserves that you often find at bulith, good luck, and if you are wanting to sell on at a decent value, bloodlines are high priority in the welshie world.

I've not seen much that is very good at Cambridge - I don't go to look anymore as last time I went there were loads with snotty noses and I don't want to take any diseases back to the yard.
