Hi,
My boy was hobdayed with previous owner about 4 years ago. He is 12 now and the only problem he has (apart from a joint prob

) is before he has warmed up he does cough. The vet has checked it out and cannot find anything wrong and thinks he is just clearing himself.
Some people have said that he probably does that because he was not really bought back into work until I had him, he just hacked out occasionally but I don't know whether that is right or not?
Also when we go for a bit of a whizz it does tak him a minate or so to catch his breath so I tend not to do that very often.
When I first had him he could barely whinny but it has got stronger although it is very deep

People do tend to look when he does it at a show

GT's have you still got your pics of Stella's op?

Forgive me of my comment as I too dont know much about it, But my thoughts are the tie-back has either un-done its-self (strange the neighing has become stronger) or simply not fit.
When we first noticed all was not right with ours breathing we had him scoped and that vet (who stood in as mine was unavailable) could find nothing wrong (I was not impressed with her findings and felt she didn't know what she was doing), anyway said he should improve with fittness. Still not right 6mths on we got him scoped again by my vet, who efficiently found the prob!

Its quite common for a horse that has been only hobdayed to cough, they quite commonly always hold a bit of mucus - you would see on a scope. The catching of the breath could be the pallet displacing, due to the mucus. A scope would also check this.

My Horse had a tie-back and hob day in February. He had the hob day via laser which i would recommend rather than having the open hole which can often get infected.

All has healed well and he is starting to come into work. He was on box rest (allowed to walk for grass in hand) for three weeks. Paddock rest on own for three weeks.

After 6 weeks they do another endoscope. Unfortunately the vet says the tie back hasn't been tied back quite as much as they would have liked but it is still a lot better than it was (he was a grade 4). So he will still make a noise.

Given i have been through this so recently please let me know if you have any further questions.

Good luck

Hiya,

What sort of work is your horse going to be doing? I bought a 17.3hh german wb in feb this year for my dad to ride, initially to hack, but with the intention to hunt later on. When we tried him we noticed he was getting out of breath really quickly, ie in trot and canter, we asked the seller, but she just put it down to lack of fitness. Well we've had him nearly 7 months now and despite doing a regular fitness regime, he still has this problem with his breathing. I have been concerned about it for a while, although i know it takes larger horses longer to get fit. This week i decided to act on my concerns, by having a scope done, this has shown that he has paralysis on his left side of his larynx. A tieback and hobday has been recommended by my vet.
I'm a bit unsure, as i don't want him to lose his whinny.....
I would appreciate some advice on this operation....what is the horse like afterwards in relation to his work, does he breathe more easily, what did it cost, how long before back into fast trot canter work? Is it better to get it done now, (he's 12).

Thanks very much. mels
