Just out of the blue we've decided were going to hog gypsy tomorrow but I'm not sure, he has grown out his feathers again and we can't clip them without better clippers/ a bit of sedation. I want to keep his forelock too because he hasn't got a pretty head and it keeps the flies off. It's just so long, we have to plait it every day because he gets too hot and it's just had another growth spurt and I'd say it's over 2 ft long in one place! Just seems logical to clip it off but it's such a shame.
That said it will always grow back if it doesn't suit.

What do you think?

Chocolate sponge for all :)

why not just pull it neat and short?!

I personally really dislike the hogged with forelock look, just my opnion :p

I think he would suit it thinned and shortened....

Oh no, don't hog him. I personally think only show cobs should be hogged. Remember that growing out a hog is hard work and takes ages. I agree with the others who say you should just shorten it.

He's not really got the neck for it IMO... His mane bulks him out currently. Pull it- it might take some time, but I think hogging it would be a bit of an error.

If he was mine I would pull it. If you was going to do his feathers and forelock and shorten his tail he would look fine. I believe it all or nothing :)
He is stunning by the way

I would take the minimum off that you think would make his life easier. ie as little as possible.

I am growing my new pony's mane, wish it was as long as that!

Personally I'd pull it. I think it's a little thin in places to pull off the full traditional look, and hogging with a forelock is a pretty hard look to pull off in my opinion. A nice tidy pulled mane would suit him better.

the beauty of our lads (Shy's mane is 3 foot now) is that it all flies up in the air when they jump and they look like a wella ad ! People are JEALOUS of their manes, and secretly covet them ;) Honestly, I would leave it completely alone.

NO !! He is supposed to have that mane - fly protection and all that !

Why have a fab hairy coblet and then ruin him

hehe, you litle cob hair lover you! XXXXXX

Freddie has rubbed the top of his mane short, so I have pulled it all shorter and it looks fine, so I would say as others have said and just pull it shorter? let me see if i can find a photo of Freddie with his newly pulled longish mane, may help you decide! I wouldn't personally hog this time of year it's a bit mean, plus think it looks weird if you leave the forelock XX

This should make your horse cooler?

Don't you dare hog that! If it gets in the way learn to do a running plait and re do it once a week but it would be a sin to lob that off!

Pull it, he will look very smart :D

Ach Freddie...........a friend always used to say that in his Edinburgh accent whenever Freddie Mercury came on tv, lol.

Have adopted it for your lad ;)

ooo he even has the same headcollar as Shy, lol x

Scottish people scare me, I had a bad experience with one, I need to find a nice scottish friend to change my opinion :-)

Thanks DD, I love Freddie :p I think I am going to get the solo comb on it then go over with a pulling comb tomorrow. Not going to hog him. Jenni- he's in a running plait 24/7 and it irritates him, he just gets so itchy even in his fly rug he rubs. And I fancy a change :)

Freddie will be hogged when he's a big boy and hunting, but will always have a mane in the summer, I like horses all ways :-) Freddie didn't mind being pulled the other day, don't think he felt it! X

NO. Step back. Leave well alone.

If you're going to hog, then take absolutely everything with it otherwise it just looks silly and a half done job. Pet hate of mine.

So there-fore. Leave him exactly how he is!

With the mane, just leave it in sections of long loose plaits and re-do them once weekly! Leave them loose at the top to keep him comfy. Doesn't have to be a running plait done each time. Or just invest in mane bags!

ETA - but JMO! Your horse to do what you wish with ;) But remember it takes a bloody long time to grow back! Year at least to get a 'normal' mane again. And even pulled, you end up with the horrible 'half overgrown' look when growing either one back. Our other cob who was hogged, his mane grew back horrible after.

agree, you can't hog those luscious locks! ;) He's a gorgeous boy. Pulling does make a huge difference, it broke my heart to pull the mane of one of our horses (he was boiling all the time!) because it was long and beautiful but he looks surprisingly good with it shorter & it made such a big difference to him heat-wise - it's only mid-length so not uber short but is so much better.
You could always do standard plaits (or bunches!) if you're pressed for time - not as pretty as a running one though! x

Thanks everyone... Finally found a pic of what it used to be like about 6 months into when we got him, first it was horribly short and he was fully clipped too and it just looked wrong, so I think if I pull it to this length it will look ok? I just can't cope with it so long at the moment and if I pull it slightly it won't give the natural look anymore and will look silly.

It depends what you want to do with him. If you plan on showing next year with a long mane it won't grow back in time. If I'm hogging I prefer to do the whole mane and legs. Also remember we don't get that many hot days and it will soon start getting cold. My boy has a really long mane too and on hot days I just plait it into long plaits and then put it into one long running plait along the top. I had to take my boys feathers off as he got mites and was so itchy.
I think it would suit your boy but that's it's a big decision as its so much hair to grow back if you don't like it!
