hi ,am thinking of taking horsebox to ireland to buy a connemara pony.has anyone bought from any of the sales there. What was the cost of taking box and are there any pitfalls i should be aware of.Am cheesed off with the prices here for a 14.2 connie ,when i know they have bought it over from ireland a couple of weeks previous.just thought it might be better to go to ireland and look for my self.thanks.

I'd be prepared to go to breeders as well as sales. There are a good few breeders round here and you might get a better idea of the pony's character etc in a more 'private' viewing. Also the breeders I know aren't taking stock to sales atm because prices are so bad... they're hanging on to them and selling privately.

Are you looking for broken or unbroken?

Unfortunately you have just missed the clifden sales, but there are ones in august if you can wait till then :)

The sales are in conemarra, Galway, home of the conemmara :p

We just got back from clifden and bought 5 but we used jacksons transporters. They were bought on saturday and arrived monday. Think they were quite cheap too so, i would recommend them instead of driving as its probably cheaper if you book a cheap flight and hire a car.
They are always going to be dearer here, its always like that.
But you will find nice ones and they are cheap. We bought a gorgeous 14.1hh 3yr old golden dun for €1100.

Very expensive to bring your box over, better to use a transporter. I would contact a few private breeders and let them know what you are looking for.

if you are going to private places, you will have to learn to drink whiskey....lots of whiskey!

And tea. LOTS of tea. And eat fruit-loaf. And scones. :D

Mate of mine who breeds is straight out of Father Ted... he's a combination of Mrs Doyle & Dougal. You're there all weekend if you go to see one pony, with all the tea and food... but you never mind too much cos his ponies are sooooooo purty! :)

Ferry price will be up to £800 plus vat return depending upon size (ferries operate price per metre-800 is for a 12m lorry including one driver)

additional drivers/passengers £45 each

You do get a cabin and a meal included.

There are some tolls to galway now - so be prepared for your euros although no more than 50 would be needed.

Ensure you have plenty of diesel though! There is only ONE services on the toll road to galway so don't think you will 'chance' it!

Apart from that your diesel and time would be the next outlay.

Also remember the Irish Sea is a law to itself! Any strong winds and the Captain will refuse horses, so you will need a back up plan for stabling near to the port you are using.

Ensure you have the horses passport as Trading Standards are quite hot now at the ports and outside them.

Good luck and enjoy!

Cheaper to pay a transporter. I pay £250 per horse to send over, from Galway to Surrey. I have a reasonably priced connie at the moment if your interested?
