Going to see a dog - what to ask?

Thank you all :) sorry for the lack of update, it's taken me a couple of days to get in touch with the breeder. So she has confirmed that she does own a full litter brother, that his mum has had no health checks but is fit and healthy and that she is not the bitch that produced the pups with the horrendous hip scores.
So...despite not being ideal (WHY in the world would you have pups from a giant breed without health testing both parents - if I were looking for a puppy I'd run a mile!), I feel confident enough to go ahead. We'll get him fully insured, love him and cope with any issues if they arise. It'll be a few weeks before we bring him home, but be prepared to be swamped with pictures.

Thank you all again for your advice, it's been so helpful and is hugely appreciated.

Thanks Amymay :). I'm so excited, but we have SO much to do in the next few weeks to prepare for a newf - not least buying a bigger car!

Personally (this is coming from someone with a tad deformed dog, a lame horse and a fat collie so you may want to ignore me!)

If he's only to be a pet I'd go with your heart, Is the problem just that mum's not health checked so there might be an issue in the future? there also might not! if you are dead set on this particular breed. I would do as you suggest first and ask to speak to the vet- maybe before and after the jabs visit. Could they carry out almost a pre-purchase vetting as in horse land?! Can you get all his history from the vet? Can a hip check etc be carried out on an older dog?

I've recently rehomed a collie who I had reservations about but she's very quickly become part of the family and I cant imagine being without her already. I was unable to speak to her former owner at all and there are a few minor things that are not ideal but the good outweighs the bad by a million miles.

Gosh, Sorry! My idiot laptop only showed a few replies and now I replied I can actually see pages full and that you are getting him. Really excited for you and I don't think you will regret it.

Poiuytrewq - thank you :) I'm getting more excited by the day. I remember you posting about your collie, I'm glad she's doing well.

4 more sleeps :D. Unfortunately, I've had a stupid cough that tonight has brought it's friend fever to stay and pretty much knocked me out cold...I really want to feel 100% on Saturday - need to get better quick!

I'm very excited for you, newfs are beautiful.

Loads and loads of photos please :)

We rescued our rottie girl - I think it's always difficult when you don't 100% know their history but at the end of the day if you aren't breeding from them I don't know if it's the be all and end all. If their temperament suits you that's the main thing! We know nothing about Mollie except that she was abandoned in a park and she's fantastic.
