Going to see a horse over your budget?

In the current market is it bad manners to go and see a horse that is slightly over your budget?

When Lil sells I will have an absolute maximum of £4k to spend on my next horse, have seen some that I would be tempted to go and look at priced at £4500.

Is it really rude to go and make people an offer?
 
I don't think so - I think people often set a price with a bit of leeway built in - and tbh market still isn't fully recovered - I would!! ;)
 
No I think everyone expects to take an offer but how much is debatable! However you won't be able to guage worth of horse until you try it, just have to remain realistic with your offer if the ad is a true reflection of the horse, not many are. Good luck, let us know how you get on.
 
I don't mind people making an offer as long as its not a silly one. Some horses are over priced and the owners expect to be knocked down a little. I would go for a look and you never know they might want a good home, a quick sale and be prepared to take less since winter is approching (fast!).

I'd say that it's fine - I agree with ^ :)

It depends on what's included though too - if your budget is for just the horse with no added extras, going to see one for over your budget but including a wardrobe may work out cheaper!

Anyway, most buyers will consider reasonable offers, so good luck!
 
I'd just be honest from the start and say what you have to spend. They can either say come and look or don't bother! At least no one's time is wasted. Or you can always say if they haven't sold it in a week would they consider offers and perhaps let you know if the horse was still available!
 
Thanks all. I wouldn't go and look at any horse priced at over £4500 but I was hoping people would think that just knocking a little off wasn't too rude.
 
I don't see anything wrong in that in fact I got £500 knocked off of my girl because I bought her in late autumn and I was prepared to pick her up within 2 days. I explained that I would have to pay for transport and for her to have new shoes and we had really clicked so the lady knew she would have a good home :)
 
I think you are fine...,...now if you said you were looking at a £10k horse with £4K then that might be construed a little differently!

Heh I'm actually thinking of doing the same, so just hope its not the same horse!!! Your responses have convinced me if he is still there when I return from my weekend away I'm phoning up to go for a try!
 
Just always ask on the phone first before viewing, had this with my mare, someone viewed her who had a max of £2,200 to spend she was advertised at £3,950 they didnt tell me this gem until they had viewed ridden said they wanted but given the current market would a take an offer, maybe well ummm.... how about for that NO!!
So always best to ask first!
 
I'd be straight up about your budget before you start. If you sound like you'd be a good match for the horse they maybe fine about it. Depends how saleable the horse is.
Due to local info, I once rang about a horse £2000 over my budget, surprisingly, they were happy for me to view anyway,saying home was more important than price. Great,-til found out via the grapevine it was an explosive rearer, LOL !
