Ok nobody told me it would be -13 !! left pony out tonight for first time in week as her friend was out, shes hunter clipped in a medium weight and has been hot- so now im panicking and off down the yard at 10pm to change a rug/bring them in.

:o Pointless post really but stupid weather forecast..

Just about to head off! Think I will bring her in on a big snuggly bed of straw and a big haynet as i feel bad for leaving her out in the cold ! Im usually an out 24/7 type person but -13 its just taking the P !

No what you mean!
I drove home and the radio said it would be minus 5. Whoops! I only put on 2 rugs!
He's a half hr round trip away though so tough luck. I do feel
Guilty though. It's so hard predicting the weather when it keeps changing!
One minute its minus 5 and my horse is digging his bed up because he's cold and the next minute it's plus 2 and he's got a heat rash!
Can't win!!

I'm in the North West and it's only 0 degrees here - not sure where it's meant to be -13 tonight?!!! I saw on the weather last night that was meant to be later in the week?

Local Weather forecasts do vary from the national ones, our local news said -9 here tonight the national said it was -5, but given that it was -7 at 6pm here then I suspect it will be lower than that. Also the temps they quote are mainly urban areas, it is always cold out here away from the towns!

Good grief they won't melt ! Especially in two rugs : o

It's -5 here and mines (qhx) out naked as she is happier that way and two tbs with mw's on.

I have just come in from stables (at home), it is -10 here. Turned the auto waters off and filled buckets for each, tap was already frozen but with a little hot water over it, it quickly defrosted. Put an extra rug on each and given a bit if haylage. Now for a hot drink to warm up!

Well back from my adventures, luckily both came galloping down when I called them- they are out in lots of huge field with gates open so they have the whole lot- which is great for them! they can roam freely over huge spaces, but not so fun for going to catch them !

Seemed very keen to get in to their stables lol, and I refuse to believe horses would rather be in than out :P must be the food! although shes super tough for her size shes spoilt rotten and likes her comforts :o

I feel partially sane now.. rushing up the yard purely to change a rug.. and I have a Hipo!??
Android phones have made my world better... "At yard" Weather check! :D:D

It's not that cold out there, no frost on the cars yet and the taps are still working! Wimpy hunter clipped TB is still surviving in just the one rug! :D

Blimmin stoooopid unpredictable weather. Yesterday I was running around like a blue-@rsed fly putting a sweet-itch hoody on mine coz when I rode out there was midges around; today I've put him to bed with a warm stable rug on coz its so much colder!

You just can't win. Its been that sort of winter.

Best thing probably is to leave the blighters unclipped and hairy and just bung 'em out and leave for the winter.

me five - between 9 - 10 pm but they live in the back garden!

When i checked at 10pm wasnt that cold - 0 degress but it is supposed to get down to minus 5 tonight, didnt have to break the water in the trough. Chaser clipped TB was 'hot butter toast' warm, with a medium weight t/o and stable rug underneath. The 'hay central heating' is working a treat :D

Speak for yourself - it's freezing here! -4 at 5 this afternoon. :( Just off outside to check mine though. Love the fact it takes longer to put all the warm clothes on than it takes to get to the yard. :)

I am so so so glad I was not the only one out putting extra layers on the pony!! I was questioning everyone at work asking what temp it was meant to be locally,....decided to leave work just before dark (just in case I needed to get to the yard) and on the radio heard -8'C and chance of sleet,.....my car took itself to the yard to put on the under rug!! I was thinking 'what a worry wart mum I am....should I have left her in her mw with neck???'...but reading this, don't feel too bad!

Swear it didn't even get that cold.. a few days ago there wasnt running water in my bathroom as the pipes had frozen and that was -6! I did think -13 was a bit of a stab in the dark! Oh well,
Just wish the manege would defrost so I could ride :(

I don't think it got that cold either, now heres me sat at work feeling really guilty :o

Our yard is down some windy hilly single track country roads and at 6.30am in the mornings the hills become a sheet of ice  so after scaring myself stupid yesterday morning, i opted to keep my boys in today and text YM to hay & water for me later this morning.

Now am feeling really bad as i probably could have made it up the lanes safely.:(

My yard is on top of a hill so considerably colder than where I am. I have never known a winter where the rugs are having to vary so much from day to day. Our lovely YO is still normally up at the yard late and then puts on the last rugs etc before she finally goes home. My old mare is in a barn and it is no exaggeration to say that there is a huge rug mound on my boxes as she needs so many layers!

One cob, one TB, out 24/7 in MW with no necks on the South Downs. No hard feed, no hay 'til snow arrived, and they are STILL not losing much weight!!

Got my pony in last night as -8, although when he is in he's is nude!!!

And this morning turned him out in a lightweight, he has a haynet at night, a handfull of happy hoof mixed with a handfull of topspec top chop lite and one small slab of hay in the morning.

He was nude all day, all night before the snow came.;)

It was minus 7 at yard at 7 pm last night so my two got an extra layer too. I'm a bit of a rug fiend tbh though, my oldie especially loves his warm layers and hates having them taken off for grooming and tacking up - no way would he want to be out in this !
