So our run of SJ'ing mediocrity continues.....
tongue.gif

Went to Golden Cross on saturday for the Blue Chip qualifier...Equinox Novice to be precise...with Trike, and just to run Bo round a 1m class to 'see'.

Well, jumping DC's with Trike has become a bit of a habit of late, so it's always good to remember that they're not machines and that you have to do some work as the rider occasionallt too
blush.gif
The course was a fairly strong 90cms and being Golden Cross was perhaps a little more technical than some of the tracks we've been jumping of late. The main area of concern was the final line of a double (parallel to upright on a very long one stride) then 4 or 5 strides to the last fence...and upright on a dogleg that appeared to be built very snugly into the corner
tongue.gif
Anyway, Trike warmed up well...seemed to be very happy to be out and was jumping big and forward
smile.gif
Our turn came and we started our round. He's been inside at GC many times before...but still managed to throw a huge spook at the far end of the school on his way to the first fence...but no matter, he recovered and got a good shoot to the first which set him perfectly for the second
smile.gif
He felt as though he'd matured as I was able to shorten or lengthen his as I needed...something that hasn't always been possible in the past ! So, round to three and four nicely then a line of double of uprights on one stride to an oxer on three. Again he gave me a lovely shot going into the double and the oxer just flowed...wow!...where has this horse been all my life lol! Round to seven and I made my first small mistake...I took a pull going into another oxer which in itself may not sound too bad, but it did break the rhythm slightly...putting us on a slightl backward stride to eight. Two backwards fences is enough to destroy a round with Trike and we were coming round to the final line now and I knew I couldn't afford to be backwards again, so wound him up off the corner and got a decent shot going in over the oxer...but even on that good stride he found the distance long and hesitated slightly before jumping out over the upright...onto the last fence and we were clear so far
grin.gif
We'd got a bit ragged through the double and both of us were starting to blow a little, and we were a bit crooked coming to the fence.....and I have to hold my hands up at this point and say I dropped him and hoped he'd sort himself out as were a little long.....but for once the genuine horse that he normally is deserted, and he put down again and said nah ! A real gutter to have a stop at the last fence...and in a class that I had high hopes for him in too as he'd managed to qualify last year when he wasn't going half as well...but there you go...that's SJ'ing
tongue.gif

Now onto Bo....who as you may be aware has not been a completely happy bunny lately. Anyway, I hoped that I had found the problem earlier in the week when I noticed his saddle had dropped on his withers quite badly. The saddler hadn't been out yet but I do have a couple of spare saddles, one of which seemed to fit him much better
smile.gif
I'd ridden him in it at home a couple of times and noticed he seemed to have got some of his spring back in his step, so thought we'd experiment around a small track to see if the improvement continued over fences. He warmed up nicely enough and jumped the practice fence well...no sign of the hesitation that had crept in in previous weeks. I did still feel that he was perhaps jumping a little flatter than I would have liked, but I guess if he's been worrying about things coming down on his back then it's logical that he might still be trying t avoid going 'up' more than he has too !? I was just finishing my warm-up when I heard them calling my number....I hadn't even watched one go so was feeling a little flustered as I entered the ring. The bell went straight away and I was off round to the first before I really even realised where I was
tongue.gif
I'm sure Bo was as taken aback as I was, and he felt half asleep as he dragged his toes over the front and back rails of the first fence.....and I heard the thud of the pole hitting te sand
frown.gif
Never a great incentive having the first fence down, but after that we both woke up a little and he jumped a decent round from there on for just the four faults. On a positive note, there was no hesitancy, and OH said he looked a lot happier than he had done last time out....so maybe, just maybe, we have got to the bottom of the problem and can move forward from here. He still didn't feel as full of energy as I would have liked so a minor tweak to his feed regime has been implemented too. Watch this space
wink.gif

Looks like you might have found the answer with Bo, great news
smile.gif

Shame about the last fence with trike. I know what you mean about taking a pull when you should push or just sit. I made the same error this weekend.

On a positive note, my old user name is available if you need it

Ok, will do. Its just such a shame seeing it sitting on the self collecting dust. Not a good way to treat a long time friend
wink.gif

I had similar problem!! she galloped nearly past the last fence and I pulled her took much meaning we would have gone into the wing so I circled!!
My excuse is its our first outing in 7 months!! Typical qualfier course though straight past the exit to the 2nd fence!! not on for a nappy horse.

I also found 9a & b long. Very cold too!! but im a wuss
tongue.gif

I didn't know you were there. Might have seen your round without realising it though as I saw at least two other people have stops / runouts at the last. Did you do any other classes ?

Well done!
laugh.gif
Unlucky about the stop and the pole, so pleased to hear that they are both going well. Sounds like a good day overall.
smile.gif

I was there too, we did the clear round first and went clear, then in the Equinox Nov we got to no 3 and she just skidded through it flattening the whole fence, she cleared it on the second attempt and jumped 4 but stopped at 5a, I think she had scared herself a bit, it was probably my fault as I rode crap and I should really have pulled up after no 3.

Hi Helen
smile.gif
I did see you go in the Novice but thought it better to leave you in peace afterwards
tongue.gif
It's hard to know what to say really...she seemed to be going well until the first stop which came from nowhere. Then as you say, she seemed to lose her confidence
frown.gif
There's always tomorrow though
smile.gif

I also went to Golden cross on saturday,i dont normally go there but there new surface is fab, horses jumped so well off it,i also forgot how friendly it was down there and the bacon rolls are just the best, will definetly be going back soon to ther next affliated on 15 dec,is anyone else on here going ?
laugh.gif

Yes, the new surface is certainly an improvement...but still some way short of the likes of Towerlands and Hickstead which both have similar fibre sand surfaces.

GC always feels like a 'home game' to me...I guess because it's so close to home and I always know a fair few people there. The collecting ring stewards are very friendly as are all the staff there. I wish the canteen were a little more enclosed though...it's bl**dy freezing in the winter
tongue.gif

Dunno if i'll be there on the 15th or not...they've made a few changes to the schedules this year which don't really suit me or my horses at the moment. Most noticeably, as of the next show they have changed the 1.05m Open to a restricted 1.05m/1.10m Handicap...preceeded by a Discovery...which means Bo has to go straight into a 1.10m due to his winnings, where at the moment he could do with a 1.05m as a warm-up. The other thing they've been doing on their Progressive schedules is to run a straight Newcomers rather than a combined NC/1.10m Open as the last class (which they are allowed to do in a Progressive Schedule)...so there's just less choice of class that there has been in the past
frown.gif

How did you do on saturday anyway ? What classes were you in ?

[ QUOTE ]
I had 4 faults in the 1.10 qual and two down in the fox,but horse went really well.

[/ QUOTE ]

Bad luck. Looking at the results though both those classes were dominated by very experienced combinations. I guess that's to be expected on Blue Chip days though lol!

I only did the one class as my mares been off since june with a ligament injury so it was our first outing as such!! we did a couple of clear rounds and nearly ran past the last jump in the first class. Thought I was mean making her go for the 4th time so went home but was pleased being as I was told she would not compete again I went about 4th I think. Big hanno chestnut mare, Silver Lorry.
GX ok but always a bit cramped. The warm up is a joke but its round the corner for me. Shame crocksted not open. Im going to RL next week for a change

Rambo what is your hore as I did watch a few?

Well, Bo is the horse in my avatar, and Trike is almost identical to Bo but just has 3 white stockings and a slightly wider blaze. I'd have been the big, middle-aged bloke flapping and kicking on Trike...and generally looking pretty puffed by the end of the round

Green lorry parked in the back lorry park next to the big Lehel

Hi BluenRed. Iagree with you about the warm up at GX being a joke,i cant understand why everyone wants to warm up together,i spoke to the owner about it and although they tried to police it nobody takes any notice of him or the signage about warming up.when i warmed up at the weekend it was fine but most of the novice crowd who need 1hr to warm up had gone home.Have fun at royal leisure(there warm up is even smaller )

Think I saw one of your horses go round. I was parked near the entrance to the indoor school. Actually I usually wear some work clothing as I work for a local tree surgeon they pay my entries and I wear there coat and hoodie when warming up etc and have a sign on the side of my lorry.

Did you survive the warm up! It was terrible like usual but seemed worse this time!

Im very boring so you probably didnt notice me. Ill be there on the 15th and actually this weekend both days as got to take my daughter. I should be at every show now shes back into competing again!

I think its more the fact that there are more in the lower classes but its always been the same whatever, and thats after you have dodged the hedge spiking you! It doesnt really bother me or my horse but is always a talking point. Wish he would change the spread the other way too another talking point !!

But as I have said before its easy for me to get to, just a shame crocksted not doing anything its sorely missed!! fingers crossed someone will buy it soon then I wont have to fight the traffic to RL.
smirk.gif

Think I remember seeing a lorry or person with mention of a tree surgeon on it or them....but don't remember much more than that lol!

I take it if you think the warm-up at GC is bad you haven't been to Duckhurst yet
blush.gif
The biggest problem in the GC warm-up I think is the slope...I hate jumping that oxer down the hill. I also dislike the hawthorn hedge down the back that shreds you if you get too close...and the fact that the slope means in floods at the bottom end. Apart from that it's actually a decent size...although the novice classes do tend to draw out the more novicey types when it comes to warm-up etiquette
tongue.gif

Trike needs a lot of time to loosen up so OH usually hops on him about 40 minutes before he jumps and just walks him around the outside rings and up the road before I hop on and do a quick canter round and jump.

Read my post above about hedge I agree!!. Been to duckhurst once & wont be rushing back. I agree the jumps need moving round I hate jumping down hill especially when someone rides infront of it!!!

Im lucky my mare isnt too bad she has to do a clear round to wake up the more she jumps the better she but im always on my own or with my daughter and I dont like he coming in the warm up its a bit dangerous. So have to rely on others doing the jump.

I like the surface though, hadnt noticed anything different about indoors as it apparently is new or maybe im just thick!

Ha! if you noticed my lorry with sign that is good so do remember if you need any trees cutting!!
