One of the only breeding pair of golden eagles in the Scottish Borders has been killed by poison.
The bird was found on Sunday and tests have confirmed that the banned substance carbofuran was involved.

An investigation was launched by police and wildlife charities after the eagle was found on a grouse moor in the Borders.

The Scottish RSPB has offered a reward of £1,000 to anyone who can help provide information about the case.

The various agencies concerned are sickened at the mindless poisoning of the female golden eagle found on a grouse moor

A poisoned bait was also discovered near the eagle but tests have yet to confirm what substance was involved.

Although the golden eagle's chick has fledged it would still expect to be fed by both its parents.

The victim is thought to have been a female bird about 10 years old which had been using a long-established nest site.

Bob Elliot, head of investigations at RSPB Scotland, said it was a great loss to the area.

"Sadly, illegal persecution of birds of prey continues to be a shameful fact of life in parts of Scotland in the 21st century," he said.

"Now, after nine or 10 years together, the Borders has lost its only breeding pair of golden eagles.

"We hope that by offering a reward, a member of the public will help the police to catch the perpetrator and bring them to justice."

Lothian and Borders wildlife crime officer, Pc Mark Rafferty, said the incident showed that indiscriminate use of poisons was "alive and well" in the area.

'Criminal behaviour'

"This incident goes to show that people are still willing to take this risk, and the result is that one of Scotland's finest birds has now been destroyed," he said.

"This is criminal behaviour, and I'd ask for the public and particularly the gamekeeping community to come forward with information on this or any illegal wildlife crime."

The poisoning has caused concerns for the future of the golden eagle's chick.

"The various agencies concerned are sickened at the mindless poisoning of the female golden eagle found on a grouse moor," said Ch Supt Mike Flynn of the Scottish SPCA.

"Scotland has lost one half of the only breeding pair in the Borders and this could ultimately result in a second tragedy as it is unclear if the chick will survive."

Do not understand some people. Saw another post with a link to a video showing a cat being thrown from a block of flats FOUR times, are people no longer educated, its disgusting.
I may hunt foxes but I respect all animals, certainly never pull the wings off butterflies!! (They scare me anyway!)

Tragic.

Rather one side though. They some how forgot to mention that the Scottish Golden eagle population is at an all time high. That they are now breeding in northern england for the first time in 150 years.
That the story behind all raptor species populations is one of resounding success, with numbers increasing each and every year.

This has happened solely at the largess of this countries landowners , and their staff.

... but what has this story got to do with a hunting forum?

It has as much relevance as this one:

ASBO FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS PROTESTER
08:00 - 10 August 2007
An Animal rights protester who targeted an East Yorkshire firm has been handed an Anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) to ban him from targeting medical research facilities.
Andrew Kirk, 48, sent dead voles and birds to companies that breed animals for medical research.

Sad!

I'm sure that it kept him occupied and provide him with an out let for his energies.
Just one of the many downside to the current trend for care in the community for those with mental health problem. The HSA awaydays will soon recommence for the other saddo's with similar needs. :))

This is, of course, highly relevant to the hunting forum.
Since banning fox hunting poison is now much more widlely used / abused to control foxes on land used for game-rearing.

Do we know how many birds were poisoned when hunting was still allowed on the estate?

It is abhorrent to me that any "pest" be controlled via poison.

Forgive me, you are absolutely right.

We must thank MMIB for highlighting the loathsome use of poison now that more a sympathytic and specific method is now restricted by the Hunting Act 2004.

Is it???

Not around by me. The shooting lads are out lamping them virtually non stop now. My contacts up in the land of the haggis have been killing more foxes every year since their ban came into force by using the prescribed methods available to them.

As predicted banning hunting wouldn't save the life oof one single solitary fox. :(

Oh, that old argument again. "I love animals so I kill them", I've never really got that argument, I suppose it is like the "I'm not racist BUT..." argument people use when they have a problem with the black/asian/jewish (add any monority group) community.

Its quite a normal argument.

And a common feeling throughout mankinds history.

I love/like/respect my sheep.

And then I kill them.

I kill them for food. I love to see sheep in the fields. I love to see deer in the fields.

If things were left to people like you we would have millions of everything and it would be a paradise.

Custardsmum,

Sadly the shooting/hunting fraternity do not care for predators like Golden Eagles that tend to catch the quarry they are after, such as Grouse.

Many birds of prey have been poisoned in that way by the shooting fraternity or those with links to the hunting fraternity. As one can see from Soggy Brains reply, the fraternity will always try to justify such killings, stating in this case that "numbers are at a record high" this may be true, but it is still only several pairs. The same can be said for the hunting of the Red Fox. If the Fox had a natural predator, it too could expect to be hunted by the fraternity to ensure that they had enough quarry to chase down and kill. I wonder if you have heard about the huntmaster that was breeding Foxes himself to ensure a good number for hunting? I am certain that was not an isolated case either. The nature of the beast never changes in this respect.

Apparently it often happens in Robbers Bridge, Exmoor. Fox cubs are traded for a bag of wheat or a leg of Lamb in a pub called the Lion.

Exmoor Gold is served to all and a barn dance begins to the tune of knees up mother brown and cotton eye Joe!!!

Now, back to serious matters. As you will no doubt have heard by now, another case of Foot and Mouth has been confirmed in Egham, Surrey. I have heard that Defra were ahead of the game in this instance and immediately took action to ensure that this case is contained and eradicated. Mr. Brown, the PM today personally chaired a meeting of COBRa in order to coordinate the Governments response. The PM has further vowed to "root out" the causes of this disease and contain it at all costs.

There is no crisis, as some have suggested. This is not the time for political point scoring and propaganda. One has a choice. You can either create unease and distress at a time of real difficulty in the rural communities or you can support the initiatives and guidance coming from the relevant authorities and ensure that people are not further distressed, which has to be for the good of the rural community, now and for the long term!

Well said !!

You must be the best bit of propaganda for the consevatives i have seen in a long time.

No crisis?

A movement ban came into effect at 12.50 today.

How is that NOT a crisis?

What are the initiatives I should support ?

Still at least we had a good days hunting yesterday!

Yes, we had a good day yesterday too, Tom. That'll have to do us until well into October now.

At last - we've seen the most rash statement since, nearly 20 years ago, Bill Giles said there wasn't going to be a hurricane:

"I'm satisfied that foot and mouth has been eradicated from the UK in 2007."

The Tories are out of touch and have no policy. Except the policy that they will not cut tax... or at least they won't promise to. What is it they say? "Stability before tax cuts" - it is tax cuts that bring stability!

<<No crisis? A movement ban came into effect at 12.50 today.>>

This was, of course, an important measure to ensure that we contain and deal with this further outbreak in the most careful and thorough way. However, it does not mean that we are in crisis. It is very important that people do not over react and upset themselves necessarily. It is, of course, a worrying time for farmers and the rural community, but all that can be done 'is' being done. In that we must take comfort. The situation is being monitored so very carefully and we have learnt a great deal from the outbreaks of the past.

<<What are the initiatives I should support ?>>

There are a range of measures. www.defra.gov.uk can give you the latest updates and suggest ways in which to further protect your farm/allotment.

Oh dear, Lord Chequebook doesn't seem to be talking to me anymore. But a serious question to everyone else if I may ... does anyone out there have any faith remaining in Defra?

I can't make up my mind whether Debby 'does Dallas' Reynolds, the lickspittle chief vet, is a liar or a fool. She came out with this gem yesterday:

Chief vet Dr Debby Reynolds said up to 300 cattle were being culled on the farm, and a "small number of pigs".

Is 800 pigs a small number?

At the time of this statement, all indications were that the disease had infact been eradicated. Mistakes are occasionally made in these matters, however lessons are learnt and the situation is dealt with swiftly.
