<<does anyone out there have any faith remaining in Defra?>>

Why should you suspect that anyone out there hasn't faith in Defra. I know things have been difficult since Mrs. Beckett left, however, the same people are there on the ground ensuring that the rural communites are served in the most sensible way, now and for the long term!

I used to teach an equine industry module which discussed hunting (just before the law changed). In an effort to give a balanced view, I sought pro and anti hunting videos, the most 'similar' pair in video length, production quality etc.
The hunting one, produced by a hunt I forget where...showed foxes being bred for hunting, with suitable tracts of land being coppiced for the vixens to rear their young.
It was a real weakness of the video, which otherwise provided an argument about the need for fox control...they rather shot themselves in the foot (sorry).

Defra are known to most people around here as dafta. People would love to protect their farms and animals but ramblers and such like seem quite happy to tramp from one farm to the next. If anyone thinks any farmers have any faith left in this government they must'nt know many farmers. ps.... we had a great start aswell just a bit short for now!!!!!!!

Shilasdair people involved in hunting do like to use the excuse of fox control as an excuse to continue this sport but fail to provide the public of their true intent, blanketing their reasons with stupidity as you yourself have found. It was an excuse, it is an excuse and always will be an excuse.

You misunderstand. I said you are good propaganda for the conservative party.

"However, it does not mean that we are in crisis. It is very important that people do not over react and upset themselves necessarily"

Well. you little prick, lets have a look at the word crisis shall we?......

the dictionary says it is a time of serious difficulty or danger......I get paid once a year......at the moment I can't sell so I earn no money. I have had expenses and no income so far this year.

I CALL THAT A CRISIS.

I would still like you to tell me which initiatives from DEFRA I should support.

Or is that a question too far?

I have no faith in DEFRA so there is one for a start. Maybe there is only two of us.

But it has to be said that things are better since Rosa Klebb was "promoted" to the UK's first and best foreign secretary.

Her green credentials were impeccable.

And nothing like keeping it in the family !!!!

Shilasdair,

Thank you for reporting this fact. No need to apologise for exposing the truth. If Fox numbers are low, hunts tend to help them or actively breed them in order to ensure a good number for hunting.

It goes to prove that this is not population control, but actually sport through and through.

Regards

Have found my old lesson plan.
It was called 'Hunting - The Facts'. I don't have a copy to check as it was a library one, but perhaps you know it anyway?
I haven't any political opinion either way about hunting - have no axe to grind, as it were.

On the contrary, you appear to need some help with manners. Are you always this rude...or are you blustering because the other posters are more articulate than you?
Either way, you are not much of an advert for hunting, are you?

Consider yourself ignored, as are all naughty children who don't know how to behave.
I suggest if my posts regarding hunting videos that pro-hunters like yourself produce upset/embarass you, that you should avoid reading them by finding 'Shilasdair' and clicking on 'Ignore this User'.
I am sorry you don't know how to discuss things civilly.

Sorry to copy and paste but I found this and thought TF might like a read.

Sunday February 17, 2002
The Observer

Hunts across the country are breeding foxes in specially made dens to ensure an adequate supply of the animals, undermining claims that they are killed only in the name of pest control.
The 'artificial earths' are built on the territory of more than 50 hunts, from the Isle of Wight to Cumbria, including some of Britain's most prestigious such as the Quorn and Beaufort hunts.

The earths are usually sunken concrete chambers built into the ground and connected by a network of tunnels. Foxes are encouraged to live in them and are sometimes fed and given water. They are usually built in areas near to key hunt 'meets', for example in woodland that will be hunted on Boxing Day or other prime occasions. The earths ensure that foxes are always available for a hunt in a specific area.

You are right Shilasdair, TF can be quite abusive and rude to people who don't agree with his views.

No, I am not particularly rude and I have no problem with other posters being more articulate than me.

I have never claimed to be articulate so if it is an attempt at an insult it is pointless. I am a sheep farmer not a journalist !!

I asked you where these artificial earths were. You seem to be floundering.

And no, I am not an advert for hunting. I am a simple farmer.

Thanks, Wrighty.
Don't worry, I just ignore people who are too immature to discuss things civilly. The video I referred to might have been the Quorn's PR attempt (but it wasn't well made at all).
I'm not pro or anti though....so not taking sides....just not impressed with rude posts....from either pro or anti.

Wrighty,
The video I used to use - it was by the BFSS (?) British Field Sport something, called Hunting - The Facts, was narrated by someone Kennedy with a rather depressing voice, and showed woodlands specifically created and managed to breed foxes.
Now I don't care that hunting folks did this...but it didn't seem to make sense with the idea of controlling foxes as a pest (which I'm sure they are) which was the main tenet of the video. To stay balanced here, I have to say that the anti videos were a little...wearing and sentimental.
I think both needed to employ a good PR company!

Don't worry, you certainly didn't sound articulate ;)
But I'm not sure what point you are trying to make to me, or ask me. Seriously. Do you think I'm anti-hunting? Or pro-hunting? What part of my posts said 'Hunting folks are evil'?

Well, the point I was making (obviously without clarity :D) was that, if the argument for hunting is to control the fox population...as foxes are a pest which take lambs, poultry, etc, then why would you include a section in a pro-hunting video showing efforts to breed them?
There, did I explain better that time?

I know you are ignoring me but I am going to answer anyway.

I can't for the world understand why and what a pro hunting hunting video (whatever that is!) would show people making artificial earths.

To me it is bizarre behaviour.

I hunt to kill foxes. When we kill one it means there is one less.

I want some foxes but not too many.

If the numbers aren't reducing quick enough with hunting I snare them as well.

I condemn the Quorn for idiocy if what you say is true.

Tell me, are you pro or anti hunting?
