My mare is prone to weepy eyes year round - vet has chkd them in the past and says just to keep bathing them when weepy and use mask in summer. This evening I took off her mask and discovered a v weepy eye with lots of goo! Bathed it with water which cleaned it up nicely, eye doesn't look sore as such and she seems okay with me wiping it. She does have very sensitive pink skin so this has a lot to do with it being sensitive. Will bath again in the morning and keep a close eye on it (excuse the pun :D ) I have heard golden eye is good - is it worth a punt? Obviously if it swells/gets worse etc the vet will be called asap. Suggestions please :)

I'd call the vet and see if you can just collect the proper horse ointment from them. I paid £4 for a tube last year and it was cheaper than goldeneye.

Can the vet give out the ointment without seeing the mare first? Always thought they needed a consultation :)

Get some chloryphenical (spelt something like that) eye drops or eye gel for conjuctivitis from the chemist. Tell them it's for you though as they can get a bit funny. It's the same stuff the vet would prescribe but costs about £4 from our chemist where as the vet charged me about £15.
If the eye looks puffy or is not fully open though I would get a vet to have a look.

Thanks guys :) will pay a visit to the chemist tomorrow. The eye looks normal just very gunky - white gunk not green or yellow. :)

Yep. Can totally recommend Golden Eye. My retired boy who is out 24/7 gets weepy eyes and can't keep a fly mask on for 5 minutes so as soon as any sign of soreness I buy a fresh tube and apply daily and within 2/3 days his eyes are much better.

Went to bathe and chk them this morning and they're looking so much better - a lot clearer and no discharge :) will get the golden eye anyway incase I need it in future but for now the water and cotton wool seems to be doing the trick :)
