I’ve wanted to go to Golega for a while, this November me and three friends are aiming to visit for - well we haven’t decided how long for! Or anything else at all, so any advice you have would be great please.

I know there are plenty of people on here who have been before - can you give any advice on where’s good to stay, other things to do or should we just gawp at horses the whole time and drink port? Haven’t even looked at flights yet… Exeter would be perfect, bet we end up going from Bristol though.

You won't be able to book anywhere to stay without knowing someone. Your best bet is to contact Sussex Lusitanos who can organise accommodation for you and show you around the fair.

I wouldn't go for too many days as can get a bit much, and they're all going to hate me for this, but it can be like Appleby Fair but with Lusitanos at times. It is very traditional (although tourism has taken it over somewhat) and be prepared for seeing things there you wouldn't here (drunk people on horses for hours).

But it is also amazing and the Lusos are awesome, best to go with someone who knows it so that you get the best from it.

SICAB in Seville is also worth a visit.

shortstuff99 that is really interesting. I might have looked into it but it sounds a bit more than I would like I think :) . Is the Seville one the same?

It is worth going to see at least once but I can see why some would not like it (and others adore it)!

SICAB is different as it is the PRE horse championships so there is a lot more competition going on, with dressage, showing, working equitation etc held in 3 indoor arenas. You can also walk around the stables and see all the horses. Has shopping like Olympia etc.

@shortstuff99 sicab sounds interesting, I’d only heard of Golega when I rode at Pen-Llyn some years ago.

I was thinking of renting a nice villa a taxi ride away but maybe that’s not going to work at Golega.
You might be able to do that, worth looking now to see what free. Pen-Llyn are experienced in going and they might be able to help you organise if you're still in touch.

I’m in the South West and will be going to golega this year (from Bristol not Exeter as no flights to Lisbon!) you’d be welcome to PM me - it will be about my tenth time of going (I don’t go every year!)

We did SICAB last year. It was truly unbelievable. Have looked at Golega, but will go back to SICAB again. Everything from the place, to the food and the people were outstanding. If you want any information please send me a message. :)

Thank you
It's on my list to research. Especially as we can't do much this year due to other commitments so something to look at for next year .
