Hi all
I am now onto my 5th snow day at school. The problem is that I am one of the teachers! I managed to get in to work one day and I was the only one there so couldn't open the place anyway! I live in a small moorland village and the school is 10 miles away in another small village. My horse lives in the small village at a farm opposite the school! Fortunately my friend is doing him along with her horse so my beastie is fine.
I recently bought a vw beetle which I have wanted for ages but as you can imagine is crap in the snow. My OH has a 4x4 campervan but even that isn't good enough for the steep hills we have round here, plus he has low profile tyres on it (men!!!)
We can;t get rid of either car as we need the vw as a cheap runner and the campervan for surfing. So do we just bite the bullet and get a proper 4x4. OH and I think we can afford to spend about £4-5k. It would mean I could get to work AND tow trailer.

What experience do people have of owning an additional car ie with insurance etc? What would be the best 4x4 for towing/snow wrangling? I was thinking L200? I am sure someone posted like this bfore - sorry for repeating!

Sorry can't help on thoughts on an L200 but I can on insuring another car.

I have a sports car and was looking at getting a 4x4 as a second car for snow and towing. I got a few insurance quotes for the izuzu trooper I had been looking at and insurance alone was going to be £780 a year! My NCD is used against my car so I have no discount for a second car. I had some very helpful suggestions. Buying snow tyres for the car was an option and also it would be cheaper for my horse to be on full livery when it snowed than actually buying another vehicle and insuring it. Snow chains and something called autosocks? were also suggested.

Good luck on your decisions its very hard trying to decide which way to go!! I've still not decided on a 4x4 and trailer or a wagon that have been trying to decide on since last winter!! lol!!!

i am a nurse and also had a beetle now have a mini ,again useless in really bad weather.we bought a vauxhall monterey to tow and for bad weather and its fab. our insurance is not bad at all cant remember exact figure but i am in my 40s so no claims prob helps. definatley right for us .the monterey is n reg ,68000 and was £2000 with fsh .we have had a year and love it.

Got a good quote from Admiral on a multicar policy for L200 and Beetle in my name with OH added. Only £40 more than a single policy for L200! Now I need to find a cheap 4x4!
