Hi I am hoping to affiliate BE next season for the first time. I competed over the BE80 (unaff) and schooled over the BE90 XC course at Eland Lodge in summer and jumped double clear in the 80 and went clear XC in the 90 but I have never been on any other courses. Is Eland easy/normal/hard compared to others?

Any suggestions for events that are suitable for newcomers to eventing?

Also is eventing show jumping easier than pure SJ at a given height? I went to watch the show jumping at Speetley recently and the fences in the 80/85 cm looked flipping MASSIVE. A huge step up from the BE80 fences which seemed small. Just want to know what to expect over BE90.

Thanks!

Kelsall is lovely. My 6yo homebred went clear XC in the BE80 in Sept with her young rider, who was competing at BE for the first time. On walking the course, connections wished they'd entered the BE90 instead, the main difference between the two courses was the addition of a ditch. They'd done Eland Lodge UA80 with DCs twice previously.

Wow you picked your place to test yourself - lol!

Yes Eland is a hard course, up to height and technical. I know good eventers that don't go there because they find it too difficult, so if you've jumped round their BE90 course, you'll be fine anywhere else.

Speetley always build up to height and always run single phase so their second half of the 85 course will be a good 90/95. Pure SJ is generally most fences up to height whereas for BE you'll generally find only one or two are.

.

That's reassuring. Thanks!

Thanks , the Kelsall course looks great. Though the one with the pink wheels looks like a pretty big 80!

Anyway that is on the calendar, yippee. Think I'll do the 80T though if it is the first event of the season.
