Does anyone know of any good beaches to ride on in cumbria? Want to take my mare to the beach on my birthday at the end of July but don't know where to go. Any recommendations? Thanks :)

I'm in south lakes but can travel :) I'll ask the heavy horse place about it, thanks. I'm just a bit wary as my friend got stuck in quicksand on part of morecambe bay near carnforth on her horse so don't want to go there. Any other suggestions? Will have a look at St Bees too :) Thanks

I think Silecroft is the beach the heavy horse people ride on, it's also the beach Murthwaite Green ride on:)

That looks a good one to go to - only an hour away from me so hopefully the mare will survive that long without murdering the transport :P Has anyone ever ridden on it? Is it easy to get to?
Thanks :)

Yes, MEEEEE!:D I have been riding at Murthwaite Green many times. It is very easy to get to, you just drive through the village and keep going until you run out of land;) There is a carpark area where horseboxes are allowed (don't know whether or not it's free though - I think it is?) and you have to go onto the beach via the approved horse route - there is a sign, from memory. And I think they probably prefer it if you pooh pick if they go right near to the carpark, which seems fair enough to me:)

You can either go for miles along the beach in either direction, or if you get the OS map out it is possible to go right at the beach, then after a while you come up a little wash and onto tracks, bridleways and little lanes to get back - it is long time since I did that ride though so you would need to check it out. I think the beach riding is better if you turn left though, as you get off the shingle and onto plenty of sand that way, whereas from what I remember the other way there is more shingle and less sand (though you can still have a canter as there are big enough sand stretches).

Thank you for that it sounds good :) Sounds like a very horse-friendly beach :) I will let you know nearer the time which one I go to and obviously photos afterwards! Thank you :)

Nell, Silecroft is the one I told you about! Also down past Bootle is good. But if you come up this end you'll have to come and visit you know!:D:D:D
Rosie x( FDC)

I thought it was FDC! The name rang a bell :) I will - i'll have to come and meet little and large :P It's over a month and a half away but i'm already excited - will be the first time she's gone out anywhere with us that wasn't vets or similar as we don't have our own transport so borrowing a trailer but it should be good - i can't wait :D
