My horse has to be on shavings as when on straw tends to eat it all, (i have already tried adding Yukabed and no success),
However he is exceedingly messy (wee) and need shavings that are affordable and very absorbant, any ideas?
I was on Bedmax but the whole bed became soaked in 3 days...
then i tried Goldleaf which lasted 4 days...
and now im on Aubiose which is very good but still not as absorbant or as affordable as id like
Any advice is appreciated! as my cob loves to roll but not in a wet bed!

have you looked at why he is peeing so much, possibly his diet could be too high in protein which causes this or is he bored and therefore drinking more than he should by playing with his water. Is he taking in more salt than he should from his salt lick causing him to drink more.

He recently had a blood test and vet checked on him and there was no indication of any problems meaning he would pee alot,
however he does have a salt lick which he uses alot... (bordem maybe) which is probs why he drinks alot! Thanks for helping me understand now!

Mine is messy too - largely because he will only pee in his stable and no where else. He has full rubber matting and then half a proper bed (bed max) on top at the back of the stable - He gets 2 bales of bedmax a week and has a pretty good bed. He is a mw ISH and spends quite a lot of time in his box - stabled overnight anyway and only spends about 4 hours out in his field before he starts demanding to come in..

Having had a number of very messy horses to do over the years my advice to you would be to use a LOT of bedding.....go completely against what yur instinct tells you about being sparing with it and chuck in TONS. Leave it alone as much as you can and it will bed down underneath eventually. Horses are big dirty animals which we try and confine in a very tiny area....they will get wee and poo on them no matter what but they need a decent bed whatever happens.

Megazorb is excellent and probably the best and most thirsty bedding I have used on mucky horses.

Wood pellets? supposed to be very good for wet horses- I am taking delivery of mine to try out tomorrow! will let you know what i think of it.

Ive got my ID on mats and wood pellets and it works very well. He is very either active in the stable or flat our snoring so the bedding takes quite a hammering!

Hi,

I have a very messy TB. Having tried Straw, Shavings, Bedmax and Rubber matting, I have opted for a mix.
Bear with me! ok, you don't need matting, but as I had purchased it anyway and he loves to roll, there didn't seem any point in not putting it down. Then a bale of regular shavings in the middle of the bed, and then a regular straw bed over the top. Now this may seem excessive, but here's the economy bit. I only ever took out the wet once a week, the shavings absorbed the lot, and the straw remained a nice bed on top. this was to 1) Save time during the week, and 2) to cut down on the costs. It has only ever cost me one bale of shavings and one bale of straw a week, which is a whole lot better than the 3 shavings he was getting through.

might be worth a go, but appreciate he may eat the straw unlike mine who loved his hay too much to care for straw!

A really deep paper bed?- one of my horses is v large and can be quite messy and I've found that if I give him a massive thick bed it does soak the wet up well- it can be annoying looking for the droppings sometimes, but I'm allergic to dusty shavings/straw!

Cardboard makes a v stable bed too but I found paper to be better for my horse.

Finer cut shavings are normally more absorbent than the larger cut ones.
