I have always had horses on straw and I find that shavings take forever to muck out although it probably will speed up when I get used to them but I hate them!!

What would be a good (cheap) bedding for a horse that trashes the bed & hides droppings in the banks, she already has rubber mats?

I had this I have posted about it before. I use the contraversial no bedding and mats option with a bit of straw for wee & poo

(waits to be shot down in flames again!!!)

Have you tried paper? It gets a little bit smally though

flax, would he eat that? i find it sooo easy to muck out as drops thro the shavings fork and cheaper than shavings. I use a bag a week deep littering in teh week with a proper clean at w/e.

I do the same - rubber mats, about two shovels of woodshavings near the back for pee, and clear the whole lot out in the morning. Takes approximately one song on the radio for each bed, including trip to muck heap!

All of mine (all geldings) are much cleaner on less bedding and go in the same spot - maybe because they can see/smell where they last went much easier, and they make the effort to move over and dung in a pile. Only one is still a bit random - goes when the mood takes him, but still does most in one spot. I do put down a big bed if any are lame, lami, etc. Also I do a quick skip out when I feed of an evening, cos I am sad like that but it leaves the stables all clean for the night.
