As title really, I will be doing my internet Christmas shopping this weekend and would really appreciate any recommendations. I've looked on Amazon but there doesn't seem to be anything that goes into detail. The Allen photographic guide is a little on the basic side.
Rioja and mince pies for all who help

Jack Hance wrote a book on Equitation and had a chapter discussing riding astride v. side saddle for ladies and there were some lovely pictures of his daughters galloping and jumping side saddle. It wasn't in any depth, but there was information on turnout, position in the saddle, etc.

He said that for ladies who couldn't devote much time to riding, side saddle was better as the saddle gave the rider a more secure seat and thus better hands.

School for Horse and Rider - there is one on sale on ebay at the moment for about £10.00.
Interesting to have on the bookshelf, for the pictures if nothing else.

I've got a whole library of them from the 1880's to now! Some are a bit "dated" when it comes to side saddle riding though as like anything else, sport evolves over the years.

My favorites are all the Janet Macdonald books (there are 3, Riding Side Saddle, Teaching Side Saddle (which is useful as it gives you insight into why the teaching is telling you to do something- I read this one in conjunction with the Riding side Saddle), then the third one one was written in conjunction with Valerie Francis (also called Riding side Saddle). All three are good!

The Betty Skelton book, Side Saddle Riding is also a fav of mine too as she gives useful tips and explains things clearly. It's a hard book to find but buy it if you come across it.

The Rosamund Owen book, The Art of Side Saddle is also very good but not so much a book on how to ride (although there is a section on basic riding) it's more of a history of side saddle and how to buy your side saddle tack. A recommended book!

This website has quite a few and where I've bought many a book in the past!: http://www.horsebooks.co.uk/results.asp?code=13

Wow SSG that's quite a site, with a wide range of prices. A bottle of Rioja and dozen mince pies for you.
Strangely enough, Betty Skelton was mentioned when my sister and I did sidesaddle weekend here in Spain
