Sat on a few different saddles at Your Horse Live yesterday and came to the conclusion that big knee blocks really dont suit me - didn't find them comfy at all. Woman on the WOW stand said it was because I was so long from hip to knee. Apparently this is something quite desirable - first I knew of it lol! But I dont really ride as long as a pure dressage rider as spend so much time in short stirrups hunting/jumping etc. so the knee blocks dont really sit in the right place for me. She tried a thigh block which was much better as my knee sat underneath it.

I need to think about a new dressage saddle for Monty as my current one is about 16yrs old and not really helping me anymore as not much in front of my knee at all and it seems to be tipping me forwards. It is an Albion Style so has a nice cut back pommel which suits his withers. Any ideas on any other brands of saddle which might suit my leg or is it gonna be a case of trying to get a saddler out to try some different ones? I find it's always useful to give them an idea of what brands you're looking for.

Passier. :)

They seem to be out of fashion now (although not any cheaper!) but I love them because they are long from hip to knee, don't usually have massive blocks (although you can get them) and have a "semi-cut back head" so fit a range of shapes. They are not "cushy" though and the seats tend to be quite flat and slippery so this might explain when they aren't that popular anymore.

I used a Busse "soft touch" dressage saddle on a TB i was riding. I cant stand having loads of blocks in the saddle and this one was very simply cut and the panels feel really comfy to the touch. I hacked everywhere in it in the Austrian hills!!

Was also very nice to ride a bit of dressage in!

Yep I have the same problem. I have a 35" in side leg measurement, and proportionately I'm longer from hip to knee than knee to ankle.

I have an ideal susannah.

I'm very long hip to knee and have an Albion SLK Ultima which suits me and my high withered mare. I tried a lot before settling for this one.

One thing I would say though is beware of writing off or choosing a saddle before trying it on the horse. The model I really wanted and had ridden previous horse in and felt really suited me just didn't fit me once it went on current horse.

I think as you have done its all about sitting in as many as possible. I have had a lot of dressage saddles, I loved the Albion SLK, but hated the ultima for me I didn't feel I had the room as the blocks were so large my legs just shot over the front no matter how long I ride. I quite like frank baines

I have an Ideal Jessica and my friend who is very long hip to knee rather liked mine, but it was slightly short - so she spoke to the Ideal people and had a made to measure (very very wide horse, tendency to go vertical as well) Ideal Suzannah and it's perfect for her.

I am 6ft and very long from hip to knee, I ride in a Frank Baines Omni dressage saddle.

They are super comfortable, very smart and Frank Baines is a genius at fitting a saddle to a horse of any shape and size.

I'm 5' 10' with 34 " inside leg & a narrow pelvis, I find the Albions tip me forwards a bit. County Competitor, were good, but now have found the Barnsby Lorenzo, which is brilliant for me......unfortunately it seems to be very individual....but Barnsby after-sales service was fantastic, ensuring the correct fit for the horse too.

i'm not actually that tall - 5ft7 but apparently just have a very long leg esp from hip to knee. thanks for all the saddle suggestions - gonna have to find a saddler with a large stock of saddles I think!

I went from an Albion Style to an Ideal Suzannah, which I'm very pleased with. I tried sitting on a variety of saddles on saddle horses, but found they felt very different when they were on the horse. I had the National Saddle company out (I'm in Surrey too) and they bought about 15 saddles of which about 7 fitted the horse. I liked 3 of them to start with and hated the others including the Amerigo and Passier which I had liked when I sat on them on a saddle horse. They left me with the Albion Ultima which was my first choice for a couple of weeks and then gave me the Ideal to try when I changed my mind. I was amazed how different all the makes of saddles were to ride in

You sound similarly put together to me! I'm not oddly tall (5'8''), but seem to have the hip - knee measurement of someone rather taller. Any saddle with blocks infront on my knee or that come too far down my thigh are awful, toes point out/achey knees/sore back!

I have the albion platinum ultra now which I just love! The thigh blocks are perfect, but you can have them tinkered with if off the peg doesn't suit. I also have it made with extra deep rear gussets which fits my mare well. Ace saddle, with lots of alterations that can be done albions end to make it suit even more. Soooo comfy too!

Women have a proportionately longer femur than men so just going for a saddle that a tall bloke rides in isn't thw easy option...just for info :). I'd probably go for something simple with blocks on velcro, and high up triangular blocks that allow you knee room are the most useful - look for the same thing from a fixed block (did you ever see my RP? That has decent femur room)

Best saddles for me (5'10 36" inside leg) that I have sat in recently have been a Sue Carson 'Elegance' and also an Amerigo single flap (not sure of the actual design)

I do not like extremely deep seats and prefer single flap designs. I am also not terribly keen on massive knee blocks.

I have ridden in an old passier that was quite nice, and do not mind the ideal jessicas. I do not like the albion saddles I have ridden in (have always felt miles away from the horse)

My current Dr saddle is a very old Prestige, but i'm not that impressed with it - does tend to tip me forward, although fits my two TBs very well.
