good equine dentists or vet ?? Dundee, tayside, not parkside

Funny you say that because I had park side out to my horse a few years ago as she was quidding and losing weight and they did her teeth. A week later another vet looked at her (Thrums) and she as diagnosed with diastema and sent to the Dick vet to have her mouth sorted. Never used them since.

I am hoping to get Mark Thorn back to mine, he is absolutely brilliant, I am in the same area obviously. He might be more likely to come for a few. Pm me if you are interested.

If you arrange for mark thorn let me know please :) im up near tealing. Would possibly be a few who would be interested at the yard. :)

I always used an EDT, on the basis that they are specialists, but they don't have access to sedation etc if it is needed. I do however now know an equine vet locally who has done the EDT training - best of both worlds. He came and took a look at the old lady's teeth because she was quidding grass, and he removed three very very loose ones - seemed to be very confident and knowledgeable. And cost wise actually slightly less - this vet doesn't charge a call out fee for routine pre booked appointments.
I guess the answer is to ask your vet what training in equine dentistry they have had (apart from the small general amount on the vet course)

I use Arthur Kidd, can't fault him at all, great vet. Both of mine have been getting their teeth done by him for the last 3yrs with no bother.

Have a look on the BAEDT website (giyf) and theres a list of properly qualified and insured people. ONLY use someone from this list (there are vets there too) or vets from the same practice as any vets on the list - as these will be the best, the insured and the most up to date trained people. of course, the advantage with a vet is that if there is anything classed as surgery (tooth removals etc) they can do that legally - and also prescribe and administer any painkillers or sedation nececcary

:)

He is very good. It was him who diagnosed my mares diastema which had been missed for 10 years prior to that and he changed her life. What area is he in now?

I use James Spy. He's done my two horses for the last 2 years and is doing my new Highland at the end of the month. He has a really quiet approach and i am always happy with the way he works around my boys, as one can be a little 'difficult'. Hence, my reasoning for getting him to do the youngsters teeth for the first time. I would only ever use a BAEDT registered dentist now. Hope this helps. x

He's based in Forfar, they have a small surgery there now. I'm not sure how far out he travels, but mine are out the back of Dundee and a few of us at the yard use him.

thanks guys , will contact these suggestions and see what we can organise, as vet recently i have no faith in now , my horse has a missing front tooth , has done all his life and gets teeth rasped each year fine, this year , dropped lot of weight suddenly and vet done teeth .
said a back one needs removed , will be £200 , however the work he has done , hasnt helped him much and cost a fair bit , but he has left his front teeth very uneven , so i think my horse is struggling to crop the grass to begin with , hes talking as though horse will never return to full weight etc , his age catching up bla bla, hes 17yo , was fighting fit and fat until last month , with this teeth trouble , im not happy with this and how he has left front teeth , one is jutting out his mouth like a bulldog . parkside going down in my estimation , last time they treated another horse , 3 visits for same issue that had been left and missed by vet first and second time, i was furious !! xxxxxx

Also sorry if this isn’t the place to ask but does anyone know of any fields I can rent for my horse please? The stables won’t take him cos he isn’t passported and chipped but I can’t get him chipped and passported till I find somewhere for him to stay first ?any help would be greatly appreciated x

Kidd vets are great, if you’ve got transport they can chip and passport at their premises in Forfar. There is parking round the back of the surgery.
