Can anyone suggest one? 😳

Started a new job last week and today the manager said my hands need to be cleaner. Well not directly but she said look at your hands, is that because of the horses? I said yes and she said I should think about wearing gloves to do them. (Not always practical as you will all know).

They aren’t bad, but fit gets ingrained. I’ve scrubbed them at lunch and they look better now, but I hopefully am not the only one who’s ever had this comment at work. 🫣🫣 I’m an outdoors girl through and through and this is my first ever indoor job.

Wear gloves when you do the horses, it will be better for your hands in the long run than scrubbing away at them, just use different gloves for different things, a set of latez gloves in winter is a game changer. Make sure they are well moisturised too.

I've had similar comments, you are not alone!
I use nitrile or vinyl gloves now. They keep my hands clean, warmer and you can still do most fiddly jobs without removing them. I buy a box of 100 (but remember that's 50 pairs!)

I have the one below and it works but I certainly don't use it every day!

Moisturise before you go to the yard, it stops it getting so ingrained. A nail technician once told me (in those days when I used to actually get my nails done) to scrape them on a bar of soap before doing dirty stuff (an old fashioned bar soap, get some stuck under the nails) which then washes out rather than get dirt under them and have to scrub it away every time.

I’ve been wearing those rubber palmed work gloves to do the horses recently. It’s working well
You could also look at putting some barrier cream on your hands before you do the horses, it should mean the dirt washes off more easily.

A good moisturiser at night stops the cracks and prevents ingrains I used bio oil and a hand cream on top for weeks to help with this but I started using Korean oil cleaner for my face as was also getting bad skin it’s improved my hands too

I use salt - not very fine nor chunky sea salt, just normal - and no, you don’t really want to do it when you have open cuts! But boy it works.

Can I ask - what type of work are you doing? Just seems rather personal of your boss to make these comments - unless maybe you’re on the make up counter in John Lewis?!

I wear nitrile gloves too - I can do all my fiddly jobs in them :) I buy mine from Amazon.

O'Keeffes Working Hands moisturiser is fantastic, too. I keep some in my car & often slather my hands before sticking the gloves on so you get moisturising at the same time as protection.

I also find wearing nail polish can help make your hands look less outdoors-y really easily. I do have a UV set but also really rate Rimmel 60 second dry with a top coat for extra durability.

It’s retail at a large store (fashion department) so I guess it is relevant. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø different kettle of fish to me though, some of my fingers are lumpy and they look weathered but that’s what hard work does to them. Thanks for all the tips, I’m applying o’keefes working hands hand cream as much as I can now. I may end up having to get my nails done as they hide the dirt easier than having to clean them every 5 mins but me and gel nails have history of not getting on well. 🤣

OMG thats so rude! even when I wear gloves I still get some bits of staining on my hands that don't seem to want to come off, esp at this time of year when its cold out and my hands get dry!

I must admit I did think that especially as she said it in front of another member of staff. It’s one thing taking me to one side. I don’t have a warm feeling about her if I’m honest. I think she is stressed atm as has targets to meet but she isn’t as friendly as she was on my interview. But I’m trying not to overthink it and remain positive…

Does sound unprofessional… however if you’re in retail right now. I’d give her the benefit of the doubt right now, and complain if she behaves like that again

Marigolds. Keep them in the car or where your boots are. They will also protect your nails when you get them done. Moisturise your hands on the way into them as well and they will be like moisturising gloves!

I cannot stand the ingrained dirt (my other half hates it as I will scrub his hands for him on a bad day. He’s a plumber and it’s often dye not dirt but it makes me feel odd) If your hands are quite tough, I scrub with a nail brush and the Lidl version of a dove bar soap. Toothpaste works wonders on any smelly jobs and I think ingrained dirt as well!

A lot of it depends if you are going home first or straight to work. I used to work at a pub and go muck out three on my lunch break. Gloves, then dish soap and sugar before returning to work, then moisturise ever time I washed them thereafter to stop them getting sore but obviously never wanted to be presenting someone dinner with dirty nails!!

I use a home dip kit for nails, takes some practice but it’s more like acrylics so more hard wearing! Find a good moisturiser that gets on with your skin. I carry the Lidl Norwegian hand cream everywhere, one in the car, one in the pocket, one next to the kitchen sink, supple skin = less ingraining šŸ™ƒšŸ˜† writing this out this is sounding like an unhealthy obsession!

For a quick fix, especially as she was a bit rude/did it in front of someone I’d want the problem gone asap so it’s nipped in the bud! Have a long bath, put a movie on and keep your hands under the water with some Epsom salts. After a decent time use bar soap, scrub the nails with a nail brush and then use exfoliating gloves with the bar soap! It should banish the ingrained stuff pretty instantly without actually hurting your skin/feeling like torture. I actually use my face stuff equally on my hands and use coconut oil to ā€œsealā€ it in for the night. I’d love to be able to use moisturising gloves but couldn’t sleep like that!

She defo shouldn’t have said it infront of anyone. 😩 These things can’t always be helped but there are polite, and private ways of having that conversation. Keep a mental note of it. Forgive but don’t forget. Write it down, if it becomes a habit of hers, then have a chat, if it carries on go up the levels.

Thank you, that’s really helpful. Horses are at home so I have everything here already which makes it easier and great advice about my manager. I’ll let it go this time but if it happens again I’ll ask her if she has any issues can she talk to me about it privately and not in front of everyone. Not only was it in front of a member of staff but we were near the fitting rooms so customers might have heard so I agree it’s unprofessional of her!
