I started going to local shows last summer on a pony i have on loan, a friend took us to them all as she had space in her lorry and i contributed to petrol money. She wont have space this year and i wouldn't assume she would take me if she did. We do have a trailer but nothing to pull it.
So my question is do you think it would be worth putting an ad up places looking for someone who has space in a lorry/trailer and would be willing to take me to local shows if i contributed to petrol ect.?

It's a bit dodgy for the lorry/trailer driver because if you take anybody else in your vehicle in return for money, that person should have a license and the relevant insurance to do so.

I guess it's worth a try putting an ad up, I'm sure many people overlook the rules.

Any family members with a suitable car with towbar who you could car swap with just for the day?

We have done this in the past when our Range Rover was being fixed (RR is always being fixed lol the joys)!

, some of my dads friends have 4x4s which they would let us borrow for the day but as soon as they know its for towing a horse trailer they change their mind.

id think it would be worth asking, some poeple may have the license to do it etc.

If not, maybe those that don't wont do it for petrol money per say, but maybe you pay for their classes that day or something (so its not paying directly for the travleling........ possible loop hole........ not sure!)

Do you belong to your local Riding Club?

I bet if you mention it to the secratary, there would be someone you could pair up with.

why would it be illegal, because of insurance reasons?

No. Unfortunately it is government regulations that if you take a friend who gives any kind of remuneration (even a contribution to diesel money) then you need an operator's licence.
