My daughter brought her pony in last friday and said he had bad breath!I said I couldnt smell it and she was imagining it. Saturday morning there was green yuk he smelt awful like rotting flesh so we assumed (never ssume!!) he had got the snots or a cold or even sinusitis so left him in to monitor. No cough and I had a look in his mouth and couldnt see any teeth issues. Sunday morning still the same but no worse but I was concerned the gunge was only from 1 nostril. This I thought ment he must have sinuitus or a ruptured tooth so decide to call the vet monday to have a look. He is still eating, seems happy etc etc.

Vet came said he has an abssess in his throat caused by a thorn or such getting lodged and infected. He said it was a good job I called him as it could have been serious. He also said that if he doesnt improve by Thursday he will need a scope to make sure nothings going on in his gut. Cant believe it. Poor pony still not bothered by anything! Still eating etc etc. He is on strong anti biotics and this morning he seemed a little less gunky ( was from abssess not snot and smelt like rotting flesh yuk).

Fingers crossed he be ok. It was her first affiliated SJ on sunday too, she is dissapointed but theres always another day.

I nearly waited a couple more days to see if it cleared on its own, im sooooo glad I followed my instincts and not others advise!

Sounds like a close call! My friends horse had similar bad breath last summer & 24hrs later it was dead, had very virulent strangles! Nothing would have helped that pony, but still always good to go with your gut instinct

Yes blood poisoning could have happened. Told my daughter it was a little infection if she had known the truth she would have probably ended up sleeping in the stable all night!

Will update on thurs after vets been! He seemed optimistic and said carry on light work to get the stuff out of him. so she is having fun learing to lunge (something I normally have to do!)
