I need an experienced jockey to come down and sort out a nappy horse. The horse can be fine for a few days, then become nappy, then go back to being fine etc etc etc. What i think the horse needs is an experienced person to give him a smack when he naps, but im too scared and the horse is getting worse.

Back, teeth are fine !!! The horse is just being a real so and so !!!!!!!!!!

This could be my horse any day of the week...honestly you can sort him out yourself, just relax, take a deep breath and try and rationalise what your horse is thinking???

I have a horrible nappy insecure horse who rears, spins, kicks out, you name it...BUT yesterday we hacked out together alone along a bridleway...1st time in 3 years I have owned him!!!!

There is no magic bullet, he needs to learn to trust you will keep him out of trouble, also you need to learn that he will not abandon you when he gets stressed.

Getting another person in will just make him behave for that person, it won't help you..it's a long process, baby steps...but it's definitely worth it, I can't stop grinning like an idiot!!!!! best of luck xx

he bucks, he isnt napping going out of the gate or anything like that.....he may take a disliking to something, like on a windy day or another horse going past, then all of a sudden he does a massive buck....some days he rides beautifully and is a complete angel

we are near to maidstone - im trying to find a decent rider who will give him a smack when he does it, i think the horse knows i am scared..!!

What do you do when he does the bucks?

If a horse is scared giving it a good wallop is the worst thing you can do, the best thing to do is sit confidently and ride him on, if you start getting scared and tense try singing nursery songs out loud.

He need to learn if he bucks or naps its pointless as you will make him go past anyway, even if it means you sitting on hsi quietly for a as long as it takes, I have never experienced a buck as a nap, or is he being naughty and trying to get out of something he doesn't want to do?

He is winning then, and even if he gets sorted by a better rider he will test you out again later on. Decision time for you!

So it's just random big buck for no reason (other than knowing it makes you get off).

Why are you scared to give him a smack yourself? Do you think it'll send him haring off? If someone else rides him and makes him behave it won't really help - he'd probably still nap with you.

Are you able to spot the signs of an impending buck? That split second where you feel him change shape and start to move head down? That's the moment to take action. A slap down his shoulder with your whip and a loud 'Oi!' or 'No!' and pushing on firmly with your legs.

I knwo just how you feel - my welsh can be a so and so, and I was talking to someone about it, and she said - he needs a good smack. I said, believe me, yes its likely he does, but he will have me off if I do that. response 'he wouldn;t have my rider off'

Well bully for her.

I think it would help to have someone else sit it out, without smacking him. Just someone who doesn; tget off, and will carry on with the ride. This for a few times, then back to you riding, you will have seen what he does with the other rider, maybe have her there for your confidence and try not to get off!

Has he actually bucked you off or do you get off of your own accord (I don;t blame you btw!)

Hum....sounds like old my horse...he was still doing that at 24! (love you - rest in peace). I wouldn't have called it napping....just an inability to contain his excitement. Just ride forwards and try and ignore it. I found direct confrontations over it only made things worse...as in hitting him resulted in a kind of who can get the last word interaction along the lines of flybuck..smack..flybuck...smack...bronkbuck...smack...flybuck landing as a bronk buck smack..maybe I didn't smack him hard enough but as a 5 year old I decided to just ignore it. So long as he was still going forwards that is. That way he just put in one or maybe two bucks and then it was done with.

Please don't all slate me for this...I really hate hitting horses.

I make you 100% right, my mare used to buck badly even with the slightest touch of a schooling whip till we had one of these sessions as you mentioned buck, smack, bronc, smack etc until she gave up and luckily I stayed on and now we have no issue at all HOWEVER I have no fear of her or of falling off etc so the OP really needs someone to do this for her who isnt going to jump off and get scared when he argues back.

OP fwiw I think you are doing the right thing, stick with it and good luck x

I also tried the shouting at him and jabbing him in the mouth before he did it but that never got me anywhere...and sometimes would trigger an explosion. It seamed as if he just could not contain it. One thing that did sometimes work as we got older and I got less able to sit them was kind of squeeking his name as he was thinking about it, esp. if bareback. That didn't always save me either though!

Thanks....but I went through me getting the last word so many times and it never stopped him doing it again...it was like the same row day in day out...that was why I just couldn't stomach it anymore and decided to try to ignore it. I read something written by a race trainer at the time who said as long as it's still going forwards why worry, the horse is only showing it's full of the joys of spring. Besides, he also reared and I really wanted to put a stop to that, so I adopted a policy of only smacking if he reared or thought about rearing. Seamed to knock the rearing on the head for the most part, so long as I let him buck.
