I think its preferred that they are fairly evenly marked on both sides, and although a personal preference, i prefer coloureds with more 'colour' than white.

(Hopefully resizing has worked- apologies if the first image is too big)

As far as i am aware, even markings on both sides are good, also i prefer more dark than white, easier to clean!!
Here are pics of both sides of our foal, her mum is pretty evenly marked too..

What a good post- my horse is what you would say is not so well marked and does not do too well in coloured classes but very well in competition/riding horse classes. However, I like her I wish she has much more 'colour' on her legs with socks instead of stockings!
Ladybones your mare and foal are beautiful!

Please ignore the expressions on my mother+sis faces they would kill me if they knew!!

Evenly marked, with good distrobution of colour- i.e not all on the head/neck with nothing on the bottom lol!

Often a good divide between the colour and the white is sought after- the kind of mottled/mixed patches are not favoured so well.

Mmmm they are all lovely.

I've seen her now and she is more white than black but quite cobby. Markings look nearly the same on borth sides but with one patch bigger than the other. No colour on hocks sadly the markings stop just above them.

Black face with a broad white stripe.

This is very interesting as i have a lovely coloured horse - i get stopped all the time by people that comment how lovely his markings are - i have never understood what lovely markings are myself they are random patches - he is more dark than white maybe thats why? He is very flashy and i think thats why people notice him more but ive always found the whole 'nice markings' comment really odd. Im not a massive coloured fan though (only of my own) maybe if u are u do pay more attention. - Hopefully heres a pic - let me know what u think!

yeah it is a photo of a photo - its all i have! he is just under 17hh but the pic was the best i could do!! what about the markings are they what most people consider good???

A perfect coloured is 50 - 50 white and colour, with markings same on both sides, ie mirror image - few and far between.

Stinky is not bad, has done well in colour and markings classes though I don't bother now as we have other classes to do now that he is being ridden

For me, the fact that his tail, forelock and most of his mane is black is an added bonus on show days - far easier than my previous mare who was all white in these places.

It's been said that Freddie is well marked as he's very symetrical with a half and half mane and a predominantly black tail.

Taffster, dark hocks and predominantly dark markings aren't necessarily preferred by judges, only by owners that have to clean them, lol.

I notice that every single photo is of a tobiano. Personally I would pick an overo over a tobiano every day, but that's just my preference.

In the UK my mare would not be popular (because of her patterning, eyes and build) ,here, I have been offered a great deal of money for her purely because of all that (plus her breeding) Ideally though I am told she should have more white on her off fore.
