Jay Man was back at the vets yesterday, for his final scan on the suspensory ligament. He had a minor strain (front leg) a year ago, but when rested he sagged in his physique and became a wobbler.

X rays showed his neck bones to be OK (for his age), and the vet put him on steroids for inflammation, and he had to come back into work to have his physique lifted agan, starting with gentle lungeing.

The wobblers went within 6 weeks, and since then he has had to be in some work - because of the wobblers, but he really needed the rest - for the suspensory.

So, all winter I was walking a tightrope; work for one condition, rest for the other.

Grrrr.

Yesterday, to all our surprise, the ligament scanned clear! All fibres lined up, the ligament is just a touch bigger, but not so big as to be a problem. All signs of Wobblers have gone. He can now be shod back up and come into some more meaningful work. Just bits and bats this year, but to return to full work next year.

Excess of horses? Ah yes, this was totally unexpected! I was actually taking Jay to see about a nurectomy on the ligament, so he could have a comfortable retirement, not so he could be ridden! I presumed that with the work, not rest, the ligament would not have healed. Excess of horses is because Sidney, my replacement competition horse, is here!

OH and Mother are happily supportive of keeping Sidney as well as Jay Man. Jay will be a year before being back in full work, and even then it would be better if he did not have to be "the one" that I compete. Plus, he has had an injury, so no guarantees that he will stay sound. Also, Sidney took a LOT of finding. He is proving fab. Young, but lovely.

I think it will be beans on toast for a long time!

That is such great news about Jay Man. I ended up with old pony back from loan once and had my 'main' horse too. It's amazing how we cope in those situations when we have to. It's great that you have such great supportive people around you too.

I am glad Jay is sound after his suspensory injury I thought it was the end of one of mine last year as he had a whacking great hole in his, my horses posture also changed he sort of sagged in the middle with a big gut but is looking better now, they must just relax the muscles so much they get weak, I bet you can't wait to get back riding:)

Great news, you clearly have such an affinity with Jay man.

But I echo the poster above, where are the pics of Sidney?!!

Ah, I do have a relationship with Jay. Sidney not so much yet, but he shows every promise.

I have not put photos of him up yet as he is not yet mine. He is here to produce for sale, and if I like him I buy him, if not he will go back to his owner to be sold. He needs producing only because he has been out over the winter, so is fat, unfit, and still in his winter woolies!

Although I think he is great, I would not post a photo of someone else's horse. I know I like him enough so far to buy him, so don't want or have a need to invite critique. I have longer to get him fit, for example we have not yet jumped, and so far have mainly hacked at walk, with a bit of light schooling thrown in. So far so good.

Once the money has changed hands then I will be happy to post photos.

You are right, he sagged in the middle, and we think that is what caused the wobblers. I have had him nearly 5 years, and other than a break for a couple of weeks over winter sometimes he had never been "rested" as he is a horse who prefers work.

When the wobblers struck I took him with the intention of PTS. At the time a strong wind would have blown him over. With the X ray not being so bad the vet suggested trying the steroids and work, so he had a 6 week reprieve. If you had told me then that 6 months down the line he would be clear of symptoms I would not have believed you.

Fingers crossed for the future! As my OH said "Jay Man can't even retire quietly!"

Good news! A friend who knows Jay well would like to do a bit of hacking out with us. Just the 45 minute quiet walk around the village, but she is a lovely rider, and knows Jay well. That will be nice for me and Sid too :)
