Finally!
Vet came out today and use the calipers, pressured the foot, had a good rummage around. We walked him up and did a few small trots. We think he's still expecting it to be sore so he's a wee bitty cautious in trot on the tarmac (but as he's unshod he can be a bit footy on the surface we have round the back of the house).
Vet is happy for him not to be poulticed, though as farrier cut away some of the foot he says to keep him in if its wet to keep the area clean and turn him out if the ground is dry.
We got stockholm tar to pack the hole in his foot and hopefully tomorrow he can be turned out if it stays dry.
YAAAAAY!
I am so so happy. What a worry my little shettie is!
