HI

i just wanted to share. many of you may remember i was at my wits end about my 4yo who had liver probs with raised enzymes.
well after after 5 months of tcl, 4months of milk thistle, 120kg weight again and lots of blood tests i recieved the great news today he has normal enzymes and nolong needs to have blood tests and can start to ween him of the milk thistle.

so yes i am over the moon and screemed like a little girl when the vet rang to tell me. fingers crossed all is now well and stays that way

the vets have no idea what caused it and we have a yrs gap in his passport so dont have a clue poss ragwort?? really unsure.

the vets are that please they dont think he will have any more probs as long as we keep him on a low protein diet! im over the moon!

So pleased with such good news! Do remember that if the problem was caused by ragwort poisoning then you need to stay constantly alert. Ragwort damaged livers cannot regenerate so it's likely that your horse would only have something like 40% of his liver function remaining. If that's true I'd recommend staying on milk thistle alongside the low (but high quality) protein diet. He'd need protection from the summer sun too. If it wasn't ragwort poisoning then the liver should recover it's full function. Sadly, the only way to know what caused it is to do a liver biopsy which itself can be dangerous in liver damaged horses because their blood often doesn't clot properly x

^^ Great advice. The further investigation on Dex and 4 liver biopsies showed he had hepatitis causing fibrosis rather than cirrosis caused by ragwort but he has still lost 20% ish of liver that is "unlikely" to regenerate so he will remain on a low protein diet with Milk Thistle- he is hunting on 2 scoops of safe & sound a day aswell as hay adlib at night.I will consider keeping him in on hot days but he does seek out his huge field shelter anyway so i may stick on a uv resisting bug rug and see how he goes..

Some hope for managing his condition-this pic of Dex was taken last week- not bad for a horse given less than a day to live 7 months ago
