Good old RSPCA..... NOT!!!

Oh poor wee soul!! How on earth has she managed a month without water? Hope they get her down safely ..

WTF!!!

``A spokesperson for the RSPCA said they were aware of Aretha's plight but couldn't investigate the matter until a member of the public who had seen the sheep lodged an official complaint to them.``

sounds like they cant be arsed

Why when they're in a field of grass with water they die because its a tuesday or its sunny, raining or because they're bored and this poor bugger lives on!!

Hang on a second, the story says that the rspca are awaiting information as to the sheeps whereabouts!!! How can they launch a rescue without the information of where she is!!! People are sooooo fast to jump to conclusions!!!.. Give them a chance!!! That picture was probably taken by the person on the cruise ship who probably has no idea how to get there from land etc!!! If someone knows where the sheep is then please call the rspca with the information as they have specialist rope and sea rescue teams who would be able to attempt to rescue her!!!

I see you have been in sheep farming too!
But I bet if a sheep droped dead in your field the RSPCA would have been round in a minute to prosecute you.

No offence competitiondiva
wink.gif

But they are aware of her plight??? and in view of the fact the Coastguard and Lifeboat association are involved it wouldn't take a genius to make a few calls - especially as she's been there for a month.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said they were aware of Aretha's plight but couldn't investigate the matter until a member of the public who had seen the sheep lodged an official complaint to them.

I'm not a softy do gooder, but they (in my opinion) are sometimes so PC it makes a mockery of what they are meant to stand for. And yes they have rules to follow in terms of prosecution, but this boils down to an animals welfare.

They do themselves no favours with bad press like this - I think most of the comments are very well put on the website

One can be aware of the plight of an animal without knowing it's location, so can the coastguard and lifeboat, it also says there are awaiting the rspca to contact them, if they have the info of where the sheep is why haven't they phoned the rs, the fire service normally as a matter of course call the rs regarding any job about animals!! Why has no one contacted animal health to locate a possible land owner??? Unfortunately the inspectors etc are too busy to get the sea team out to search the cliff along the whole of a coast! Also when were the rspca made aware of this??? They may have only become aware within the last week and because they don't have the location can't launch an immediate rescue. All I'm saying is that people are quick to react without knowing the full facts.

Hang on ,I can tell you where the sheep is its "on the ledge half way down the 200ft cliffs just south of the lighthouse at Hawsker, near Whitby, North Yorkshire" I think that is pretty specific!
Stop making excuses for the RSPCA ,Bunch of W+++++s

No idea of the area or how long it may take to search that area but WHEN were they notified of the sheep??? It is not ridiculous to think that they have only become aware of her recently....... I cannot and will not believe that they have known of her location for a month and not attempted to search!! I know the rs have too much work to deal with on a daily basis but also know that if the call had been logged then it would NOT have been left for a month without a search of some kind. It's also not impossible that the mail quote from the rs has been taken out of context, the quote 'but couldn't investigate the matter until a member of the public who had seen the sheep lodged an official complaint to them' means that they have so far not been given sufficient information to be able to find her.

Regarding bunch of W*****s, I'll take that on the chin! I was not being offensive just pointing out that there is a lack of information regarding the story to be jumping to negative conclusions.
Unfortunately as they are only a charity with limited resources they cannot be all to all animals but do what they can. Has anyone called the animal health office who deal with livestock???????? They are paid for out of tax payers pockets!!!!

Please dontb think my anger was aimed at you.You care.
I just am not conviced that a supposed animal welfare organisation is more interested in animals then prosecutions.

Are you an RSPCA inspector competitiondiva?
smirk.gif

Either way fair play for adding a balanced view - I personally don't class individuals as a bunch of W*****S, and i'm sure at times it must be pretty frustrating as a job, but as an organisation they have this reputation for a reason.
This instance is pretty ridiculous.... the main thing is, something should now get done about it now its in the public eye - just hope it has a positive outcome.
Night all

No I'm not an inspector!!! Just work with them alot! Unfortunately the jobs that don't go according to plan etc are highly publised but actually only make up a very small percentage of the jobs they do, the vast majority of jobs are done proffessionally and done well but no one hears of those jobs! (Hence the reputation) The very nature of the role of the rs is open to arguement, take an injured badger, half of the public would want in euthanased the other half would want it treated, what the rs does is bound to upset half the people! Therefore they stick to their own policies based on animal welfare. As is human nature people only spread bad news not good news......

Fingers crossed though that this sheep is now located and a rescue launched!!!! (Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I feel that the rs do sometimes (especially on here!) bear the brunt of alot of criticism which is not necessarily warranted)

Dont think she could have which would mean she wasnt there for a month. Unless she drank rainwater
wink.gif
I suppose with the weather we have been having that may have been possible...but somehow I think not. But I am not a sheep expert so maybe they can survive a month without water.

ETA I suppose she would have drunk her own urine.

Sheep dont actually drink much at all.Normally their water intake is in the grass.I dont see how a sheep could find enough grazing on that ledge though.

There isnt enough grass is there. But I guess water could collect on the ledge. Plus how come the press has a photo but the RSPCA cant locate the sheep! Someone knows where she is!
wink.gif
Sounds like a bit of DM creative reporting to me!
wink.gif
Or the RSPCA cant be bothered to go to find her. It isnt rocket science after all. The girl on the ferry has seen her several times and should be able to locate her for the RSPCA/coastguards whatever from on board a boat.

We had sheep and catching them was never easy. Do you think that if she is approached she will leap off the ledge and drop in the sea? Or even climb up the way she went down? They usually know where they came from if they get out of the field.

Wow.......I cannot believe she has been there for that long
shocked.gif
you would think she would be easy to locate, given the lack of escape routes

and clear view room the open sea

I also have the pleasure of dealing with the rspca through work and rescue, and Im going to use the old "Nothing good to say, don't say anything in this one"

Limited resources?????? Have you seen their financial accounts? They are available for all to see and 'limited resources' is not a phrase that springs to my mind in conjunction with the RSPCA
crazy.gif

That is probably better than being left to starve to death/die of thirst.
frown.gif
Realistically the cost implications of trying to rescue her would be far higher than her value would justify, and it is probably a commercial decision . Just wish something had been done a lot sooner, but typical RSPCA imo.

The RSPCA do not own the sheep!!!!!!!!!! Why is everyone blaming them when the owner of the sheep has not even come forward.
It is the owners responsibility not the rspca, but as no owner has come forward the rspca take the rap for it.
I personaly think they should now look to finding the owner and prosecute for leaving it there for so long.
I also dont belive they have known about it for so long and done nothing, dont belive everything you read in the papers.

The Sheep has been SHOT!!!!

I officially hate the RSPCA! useless, uncaring people

[/ QUOTE ]

I think you'll find the cliffs up here are lethal, and given the awful conditions lately it would be too dangerous to risk lives to rescue a sheep. Can't see the RSPCA owning many seaworthy boats either, that could cope with the rough and dangerous conditions, to go searching off the coast, nor are they likely to be experienced enough to man a craft out there and then you'd need coastguards and lifeboats to rescue them.

At least it won't suffer any more.

I'm not their greatest fan by any means, but agree that the sheeps owner should have reported it and taken some responsibility.

Plus as I work with public money - the rules and regulations and red tape are horrendous and if you break or bend them, there are cost and legal implications that maybe they can't risk for one sheep.

I'm certainly not a fan of RSPCA but as I read this thread, I was thinking, "What about the owner, Why hasn't he done something about moving her?" Surely this was the farmer's responsibility. I'm afraid SOME sheep farmers ONLY look at the economic aspects of sheep farming.
I DO know how frustrating they can be, they die at the drop of a hat and can be a nightmare to catch. I'm afraid shooting was probably the best outcome in this case, because any rescue attempt would probably have had the sheep jumping off the cliff, just as the rescuers got there.

But isn't it the 'job' of the RSPCA to come forward and help when owners do not. If every owner was perfect the RSPCA wouldn't need to exist!

ETS It says in the article it was destroyed in agreement with the owner?! So regardless of whether the owner came forward or not the RSPCA would have still shot it anyway?!

With the current economic climate YES the rspca do have limited resources! To you or me there bank balance looks healthy but in actual fact if the money situation does not change they only have 3 years running costs left before being no more! They are having to make savings that total 57 million pounds over the next 3 years in order to keep existing, animals aren't cheap to board and prosecutions aren't cheap to run. People will say what they want about the society but if your opinion is only based on rumour then take note that not all you hear is true. At the end of the day they are successful in over 97% of prosecutions and are therefore good at what they do and They can only act within the law contary to what some people may think.

With regard to this sheep, I'm unaware of the circustances but if the sheep has been shot with the owners permission then there is nothing wrong with that in law. Contrary to what people might like to think it is not illegal to have an animal destroyed humanely. Also unfortunately sheep like other stock animals exist to make a farmer a living therefore have monetary value. Added to that if there was a high chance that in launching a rescue that the sheep may leap off the cliff which would have been a terrible death, isn't shooting it more humane???
