Don't suppose anyone knows any good online resources/websites to explain how to house train a puppy? It would be particularly good if it addressed the needs of a puppy (12-week-old, newly arrived Jack Russell) kept in an apartment with a large balcony and woodland all around.

I have only got experience of one puppy, who arrived five years ago during a balmy May when we could open the back door and let her run in and out for the first month. She was soon completely clean: I vaguely remember coming down to poo and pee on newspapers in the morning, but gradually shunting the problem towards the back door and it disappearing.

I'm asking for a colleague, who has only had the puppy for three days, but is already distressed and talking of methods that I am sure don't work the best like rubbing the nose in poo. He also says puppy doesn't want to perform when out on walks ... very cold and icy now, which may make a difference.

Aaah, sorry about this very basic question. Have a brilliant book back in the UK, but it's in packing cases along with 99 per cent of my stuff and was disappointed with an initial trawl on the internet tonight.

could he not not litter train the dog?
Obviously living in an apartment isn't ideal, I'm not
sure how anyone would go about housetraining without
having easy access to a garden, the puppy is very young
and cannot be expected to hold it. You say "Colleague"?
If this man's at work the puppy won't train itself I'm afraid.

Sorry should have explained he has a partner at home during the day or taking the puppy to the restaurant they run. The puppy will almost NEVER be left unattended ... they are just "newbies" but very solicitous.

Sounds good ... they are very happy for the pup to do its business on the balcony.

Just wondering .... what sort of tray and litter would you recommend?

On the puppy not "performing" out on walks ... we never had this problem. Would it be down to cold? Does one reward with treats? How best to encourage it?

This is the method I used to house-train our puppy:

It is initially very time-consuming but I found it extremely effective and she was completely house-trained within a few weeks. I would also recommend your friend gets a copy of Ian Dunbar's book, After You Get Your Puppy, which explains the method in more detail, and also has invaluable advice on socialisation, bite inhibition etc.

We had litter tray in puppy cage for the first few weeks and have only had one small pee in the house since

and she's now 2 1/2 and not been in the cage since she was 4 months old

I have 2 JRT one being 9 wks old,she is only having the odd accident now at night so pretty good going! I am a dog trainer/walker by profession anyway and am experienced.I would advise they get some puppy pads, they are square, matts that fold out and are kind of like a flat nappy, very absorbant and they encourage the dog to wee on it every time as their last pee will be smelling on the matt so it will be even more inclined to do it on this as it smells of them and is more 'homely'.If they see the puppy sniffing and walking in circles this is a sign it may want to go any minute so you need to at this point put it straight on the matt so it knows this is where it should go,even if it has gone where it shouldn't of you should pick the puppy up say 'NO' and put it straight on the matt so that it is clear that where it went was wrong and where you put it is right. After a few days the puppy should only be peeing on the matt, when it's mastered this you can then start to take it outside,it should then start to mark areas as thats what it's learnt to do on its matt in the house/Flat.
