Hi All
My horse has had a tight sore back due to an arthritic hock which has now been injected almost 4 weeks ago and a course of Cartrophen.
I have had one physio session on my horses back 2 weeks ago and another one in a few days. He still seems tight and sore so just wondering if any of you have sucess stories with physio? How many sessions did your horse need?
I have also been using a equilibrium massage pad every day as well as carrot stretches daily.
Feeling a bit disheartened at the moment so any success stories would be fab :-)

I had a horse who had a course of physio. H wave therapy, I think it was called. He hated it, but it actually worked quite well. I've just had my mare treated, I'm about to find out how well that has worked at the weekend when I get back on...

I would suggest that you talk to the therapist and explain your concerns. In my experience people are quite happy to explain what they are doing, why and what you should expect if it works and if it doesn't.

The physio will only work if the source of the pain, in this case the hocks, are no longer causing any discomfort, it will help loosen up the muscles and get them working properly but if he has been compensating for some time it will take a while for full resolution, he may still not be 100% in the hock and he may still be holding himself in the wrong way, you need to ask the physio how much treatment he may require it certainly will not be an instant improvement.

I have used physio treatment on most of mine, depending on the initial cause the results and treatment vary, usually you get some improvement fairly quickly but if it is a longstanding issue treatment may be required more frequently or longer term, generally I have been very pleased and can feel and see the benefits, I would not be disheartened after just 4 weeks, arthritis is tricky to deal with and painful so give it time to settle down.

My horse has bilateral hock spavins and he has physio every 8 weeks to treat any muscle issues and deal with compensation. It works v well for mine and part of our 'soundness' routine
