Can anyone recommend a good riding school with good, horses and instructors in or near Surrey (Areas such as Guildford, Woking, Camberley,Windsor etc)

Looking for a riding school I can progress in.

Laris farm in chobham have a good reputation apart from that I don't know of any others in that area with a good reputation.

Never been to Laris farm personally but I think they have one of those mechinical horses to have lessons on aswell?

if your prepared to travel to Farnham , I can highly reccomend The riding centre on upper old park lane. The ponys are very well cared for and not over worked or bored and instruction is good too.

There is one in Blackwater near camberley called Hawley equitation centre , but I've never ridden there personally.

Where abouts are you from? :D

Thanks guys,

I have heard of Laris but never been there so might go and have a look, I went to look at Hawley but wasnt impressed. Ive never heard of the Farnham one either, Ill look into them as well!

I would love to have lessons at Oldencraig or Talland but they are so far away...

I've been thinking about getting some lessons too in that area, I'm from Farnborough. I went to look at Hawley too, it was a Sunday and the place was deserted, which I thought was odd. I didn't get any further that getting on the yard (which I think is gorgeous, lovely old cobbles and clock tower) so no idea what the horses are like or what facilites they have

I had a lesson at Laris Farm last year I think, they put me on the mechanical horse, as they do for all new clients. The yard, horses and instruction all seemed good, but I've not been back - partly due to my laziness, partly due to prices (although I don't think they're more than others in the area, I just think I'm skint!)

There's also Rycroft in Eversley, I've had a look round there and I was impressed, and on my yard there's lots of horse owners with positive things to say about the place. And then maybe about 10 mins further than Eversley, there's Wellington

Ohh forgot to mention , Wellington riding is between wokingham and basingstoke , they are a busy riding school/livery yard. Never been there but heard good things. They always have shows/clinics etc but are a bit pricey!

yeah I had a lesson at wellington but wasn’t overly enamoured, it was nice and the horse I rode was nice but I thought it was v expensive and was a bit to far away..

Lessons at wellington are £41 for HALF an hour!! And they got my details mixed up with my daughter's so I had a teeny pony to ride and she ended up on a massive horse. Lessons were not at the same time so it wasn't until her horse turned up that it was clear what had happened. Laris farm are quite pricey as are Willow farm in Chobham. I can recommend Higher Park farm also in chobham but ignore the higherparkliveries websites as those are for the people who ran it previously. The website is higherparkschool. They have several very good instructors and some lovely horses and are quite reasonably priced IMO. From memory £22 for half an hour private

Another vote for Laris. My partner's daughters have been having lessons there for about 3 months - before that they went to Willow Farm in Chobham (they stopped doing lessons). I trawled around several schools and Laris seemed to be the best in the area, if a bit pricey (but not much more than other schools). Certainly they've made really good progress in a short space of time, instructors are good and horses better than most places too.

The mechanical horse "Sidney" is great, I keep meaning to book a lesson on him myself. The way they work is you have the first lesson just on Sidney, then a lesson part on Sidney part on a horse and then they normally allow you to join a lesson. The group lesson they are in alternate between flat lesson, jump lesson and hacking which makes a nice change for the girls. Certainly I've been impressed with everything I've seen there.

What about Mark Sprake's place in Eashing near Godalming? I've not seen it but have had various conversations with him about their methods which sound sensible and have spoken with people who have ridden there and enjoyed it.

Bridleways in Bookham. Fantastic school with mirrors. Excellent instruction in a yard that enjoys all aspects of the sport wether you want to progress for leisure or competition purposes. PM me for details...

Whereabouts are you? I've been riding at Oldencraig now for 3 years, its fabulous and worth it in my mind. I live in Hertfordshire and go every weekend. Talland are also good, I rode there for a while but it's too far and Oldencraig focus entirely on dressage which is what I do. It is also mainly adults which I personally prefer.
