Hia, studying towards PTT exam - can anyone recommend a good book / study guide? Is the BHS manual of coaching (think it's the right title) useful? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

There are a few resources on the BHS website which are useful. There are also more generic resources on the Sports Coach Uk website (If you google ukcc it comes up top).

The Islay Auty book is useful. I'm not sure when the Hazel Reed bookes were last updated but I found these very useful.

Thanks for this Ruth. Have the Hazel Reed book. Looking for something that explains more about the paperwork required for the portfolio as I'm finding this clear as mud! Plus some ideas about what the examiners are looking for in the exam........

I find nothing gives more of an idea of what the examiners want than reading the syllabus closely. (The plain writing, not the stuff in the tables). I know this sounds simple but so many people don't do it!!

Go to a training day. Again, sounds simple but nothing compares to being told 'yes, this bit is good, that bit could use work'. I know the prices can be offputting but it's better value than books IMHO.

Remember, you don't complete the portfolio until after the exam - just the lesson plans and presentations. Again, there are portfolio days where examiners help with the portfolio requirements.

Ruth83 - I will reread the syllabus - you're right, this is helpful and I actually did this a lot for stages 1 & 2.

I am booked on a PTT training day, so looking forward to that and I am also lucky enough to have an opportunity to be a guinea pig riding in a PTT exam, so I'm sure this will be really helpful (and hopefully not too off-putting!!). I'm also planning to go to some pony club rallies with yard mates and their kids, and observe the teaching there.

I'm working on portfolio concurrent to exam prep only because I have a deadline due to us emmigrating quite soon and it will then be harder to get case studies, as I won't really know anyone. All my yard mates have been really helpful in volunteering themselves and their children for me to practice teaching on and it will probably take a while to build up those kinds of relationships again. People are less keen to let you loose on their children if they don't know you!

Am keen to get the PTT completely done before departure, as the only exam centre in USA is in Delaware!

I know practical experience is vital but I do also find reading quite helpful; I just seem to learn well that way. Especially with school exercises or directions involving the letters in the school - I'm really bad at translating spoken directions into actions!!! Kind of like when you're driving and someone gives you directions? I can't do that at all. :)

Will ask around about a portfolio day.

Thanks for the advice!
