We're planning to build a lunge pen and are looking for a good surface for it that won't move around a lot, getting deep etc - i.e. one that requires as little maintenance as possible!

We have a 60x20m arena but want to stop lunging and loose-schooling in it as the surface doesn't cope well with this kind of work and becomes very pitted and deep where I've lunged for 5 minutes and means I'm levelling daily after only a few horses. So would like to get a surface in the lunge pen just for lunging so it doesn't have to be a good dressage or jumping surface, just one that I can lunge on without levelling every two mins! At an old livery yard there was a great lunge pen and the surface never seemed to move - it was a kind of dirt/sand but don't know what it was.

Would really appreciate any surfaces either recommended or ones to avoid!

Ive never known a surface yet that doesnt need maintaining. A proper base will help but ultimately lots of hooves in the same place means maintenance!
