Doesn't need to be good on fuel or very new but could do with something under 3k...

Must be safe (as can be) for towing 17hh middleweight in decent sized trailer...

A lot of people I know have a Discovery td5, seems to do the trick you can get a cheap diesel one now if you arent chasing letters

I second what nicdan says, thats what we are looking for though have a budget of 2K, check out Autotrader as they have a few quite cheap

As long as you get on with full service history and a long MOT it shouldnt be too much of an issue as with most cars...though depends on the stories you have heard

I know some people have problems with the discos I think if they go wrong THEY GO WRONG!! But have one friend who swears by hers and uses it to pull 2 ponies so it should pull a 17hh fine!!

No it's Joanne's, mum has it when she looks after Jo's dogs when she goes on hol.

I would love one but they are ££££££££!!!!! Unless you get one a million years old!! Greg had one that was a J reg or something and that was £1500!

what age would you get for 3k?? Are you better with SWB or LWB?

Daihatsu Fourtrak, brilliant towcars, can tow 3.5t. If you dont mind a pretty basic work horse then you wont go far wrong.

I have a ford ranger. Tows 510 with 17hh and 14.2 cob no problems. Cheap on parts etc too. Sister has one too

Good for towing but not v fuel efficent when running around day to day.

Dad has a brand new toyota hilux now that is nice. Pulls my two no problems and is very good on fuel.

ah i knew id seen your mum driving one but thought it was hers.
yeah our new one wasnt cheap and we managed to get the garage to do a deal on the price so the insurance money would cover it all. i love my 110 pick up version. uve seen it havent you? loads of room for all the crap but nice and comfy inside.
ill have a look on the landy website for you

I'd quite like one now actually, they are pretty cool!!!

They are a lot of money though, but not like they have changed much.. I guess if theres nothing wrong don't change it!!

I had a 2.8 diesel fourtrak that was a fantastic tow car very agricultural ( as in not many mod cons) but easily towed 2 16.2s in an ifor trailer and was fairly economical to run. Now have a Jeep grand cherokee that i LOVE and again tows great but it is very very thirsty.
Heres a fourtrak in your budget......

So is yours a short one? Are they the same for towing?

we've got a normal car so it doesn't have to be great as a normal car, could do with driving it to work but it's not far so no worried there..

I think I want one now!!

yeah get one Sar. theyre brill, i wouldnt have anything else now. i love my new one. much better than the silver one that git nicked at new year. this one is more like a car inside- all the mod cons like heated seated, heated windscreen, abs, air con, you name it its got it.

no ive got the 110 double cab pick up version so LWB. absolutely great to tow with, have no issues pulling the Equitrek plus its not too bad economy wise, does about 24mpg

haha, won't be getting a new one!! With the boob loan and all my other CC's etc.. I don't need another one!!

I don't mind roughing it... but think I might go for a fender!!

They won't be that much to run?? Not like some of the bigger ones as mentioned above (thanks for the ideas folks..)?

Disco's may be nice cars but they do have a reliability reputation.

For bulletproof you want something like the aforementioned Daihatsu FourTrak, Isuzu Trooper, Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol. Diesel where possible.

I can second (or 3rd!) the Daihatsu Fourtrak. I've had mine 5yrs and it's over 15yrs old.

3 of my friends have bought them in the last year, most for <£1500. One has a SWB which has no boot space at all, but the LWB's like mine have loads of space.

It is basic - bit like a LandRover and a bit of a bumpy ride but they can tow a house (or 2 big horses!)

I love my Disco! I paid 2k for it. It's an R reg, 2.5tdi. It easily tows my 16.1 TB & my friends 17hh monster.

I'm lucky 'cos I know a v.good Land Rover mechanic but he says as long as it's serviced every 6000miles & looked after it'll be fine.
