Good towing 4x4

Modern vehicles can easy do 200k unlike the older vehicles from 20/30+ years ago

How much rust do you see on modern vehicles ?

My 12 plate Sorento can tow 2500KG. The Sportage can tow 2000, you sure you weren't looking at the stats for that? :)

Thank you , will go back and read the parkers guide thoroughly instead of looking at first few and thinks gahhhhh how hard can this be

We have also been looking for a "new" 4x4 and I was impressed by the Kia Sorento write up. The 2.5CRDI pre 2009 tows 2800kg (both manual and auto - cue mad panic attack when had sent hubbie to buy an auto looked at the new Kia and realised that the newer autos tow less than manual).

Anyway hubbie spoke to Kia and asked what sort of mileage could you expect off one of their older diesel engines before it becomes totally unreliable and they said it should be good for 300k although you are likely to need to change gearbox and clutch before then.

Apparently you ideally want a vehicle that has averaged about 10k miles per annum significantly less and you are likely to have more problems as the vehicle is likely to have done a lot of short trips or stood for long periods.

I was working on the Ifor Williams being 1000kg unladen, 2 horses up to 16.2 being approx. 650kg each so total weight of 2300kg so I ideally wanted something that would comfortably 2500kg to be on the safe side. Personally I think anything that can only tow 2000kg should not be used with an Ifor Williams and two 16h+ horses, you could maybe get away with two up to 15h (if not too much bone) or one over 15h and a pony. The car limits are maximum limits and you put too much strain on the car if you are towing up to the limit.

Another vote for the Defender 110. I have a 90 as it's just me, the OH and the dog, but the 110s are great family cars as long as you don't have a long journey to work (both in terms of comfort and fuel) and the Defender is simply THE best car to tow with. I've never felt as comfortable towing as I do with mine. They do fetch a premium now that production has stopped but if you look after it well, you probably won't lose much money on it. My local dealership has already hinted very strongly that they'll happily buy mine off me. It's going nowhere.
