Any recommendations for turnout boots to protect legs - I'm not a fan of turning out in boots but my mare is getting a few knocks / cuts this winter and her legs tend to swell up as a result. Do you just use ordinary brushing boots or are there boots specifically made for turnout? thanks

i use the hardy chaps and they are brilliant, only problem i have ahd was them freezing overnight and then struggling to get them on the next morning x

I have the close contact equichaps but find them hard work with the mud and turning up at the bottom. I have to hose them every evening and wash them and dry them ready for the next day which is a lot of hard work. Oh and for the cost they dont last as long as I would like them to, a strap has come away and the velcro part is now coming away. I had to send my 1st pair back as they broke after less than 2 weeks. I wouldnt mind but they are not cheap.

My boy has to go out in boots as he always gets cuts, knocks etc and I have to watch what boots I put on him as he is an ISH and is very delicate with rubbing.

I have found KITT boots great they are just brushing boots but they are very soft so dont rub and have lasted very well and are only about £15 a pair. A plus with these they are not so low in the mud so no need to wash/dry every night.

This is going to sound daft (and to some perhaps overkill) I have tried various boots for my old man, from ordinary "cheap" brushing boots (cos they're going to get trashed in the field) to expensive full length "mud fever" boots. The ones I found the most reliable and lasted the longest (and did the job) were the SMB type boots. They stayed on even in the worst mud. Also they did not turn or get loads of mud underneath etc.

Yes they are expensive (but can get cheaper brands). But they supported, protected, stayed on and were easy to clean.

Just an idea.

Premier Equine Turnout Boots - brilliant product.

Extremely easy to put on and off even when wet and muddy, velcro tabs don't die in the mud, easy to wash off and dry quickly, stay put, don't rub.

My mare wears these all the time when turned out as she has a tendon injury. She wore them 24/7 in the summer and was fine.

Can't recommend them highly enough. Best of all they don't break the bank.
