Hiya!

Could anyone recommend some decent turnout rugs please? The higher denier the better but isnt going to cost me an absolute fortune! I'm after 2 medium weight combos & a heavy weight combo for my horse who'll be living out for the winter.

Always been more than happy with my weatherbeeta taka, freestyles & landas on my other one but the prices for the new style this year have rocketed so it seems & now having a second one I cant go spending a fortune.

Tempted by the new saxon combos in Robinsons & the Rhinegold Aspens as seem value for money & high denier but not too sure on the brands? My old Rhinegold was useless but I'm talking 6 years ago so would have thought they would have come on a bit by now plus the design looks better.

Any help much appreciated!!!

From personal experience my rhinegold last year really pulled back on my boys shoulders, wasn't that impressed with fit. Other boy had a saxon and tho it fitted ok it was rather mini skirt like. They are now kitted out in shires if all weights and although some are only 600 outer they havnt leaked. I've also got a few new swish ones that have been worn in the recent down pours and they have been excellent

I'm a big fan of weatherbeeta's too and they seem to stand the test of time,..especially if they're re-proofed well when entering another winter season.

My boy too will be out over winter and i've invested in a heavy weight 1200 denier Axiom combo for him. I also bought (second hand) a shire heavy weight combo too of the same denier, so i have 2 to play with over the winter period.

He's in a standard medium weight weatherbeeta freestyle at present that's had a good re-proof dressing on it and it's standing up to all this consistent and at times very heavy downpours of late!,..it's pretty breezy too, hence the medium weight that's on at the moment, coz i don't want him dropping any weight now.

I haven't been impressed with Rhinegold or Saxon (latter leaked, former didn't fit nicely).

I have a Premier Equine, which cost me £90 7 years ago for the full neck extra thick winter turnout, and it's still going strong (worn 24/7 in winter too). However, they are now much more pricey!

With this in mind I bought three Swish rugs for my big boy last winter. 1 fleece (good fit, nice rug), 1 200g medium weight without a neck (good fit, although not deep, so fits my lanky warmblood but would look silly on a cob) and one 360g heavyweight with neck (fits well, nice and deep, he's actually too warm under it a lot of the time so stayed in the medium weight for most of last winter).

The only thing I would say is i'm not convinced how breathable they are, but as they only go on the big horse, I can't compare, as he might get just as warm under a Premier Equine for all I know! Medium cost £45 and heavy weight £70 last year, but looks like they've gone up £10 and £20 respectively this year.

You're right to look for high denier (my PE and Swish rugs all 1600) as they last much better.

One other random place to look - Hadrian Equine which does cheap wormers sometimes has rugs and they are BRILLIANT. I think they are made by Fal/ Kingshead (can't recall which!) and are excellent quality and about £50. Some of mine are now 15+ years old and apart from a little fraying around the binding still in warm and waterproof condition.

Final point - I find Masta's heavy and poor fit. Pleased with all my Weatherbeetas.

Another HUGE fan of Swish - i have bought two of their new detachable neck turnouts and they are fab, not leaked at all in the monsoon conditions and are standing up find to the hunters 'playing' in the field!!
Seem to fit my fat boys and thin boys equally as nicely!!

i really rate shires rugs and they always good prices, in fact thats all i will buy now having wasted so much money on other rugs and them being rubbish

The one i hate the most is PE, buckles always break and turn into a massive heavy mess when wet.

Thank you everyone for all your help! Loads of good recommendations to go & look at especially liking the sound of these Swish rugs! :D

The only rugs I've consistently been dissapointed in are anything Derby House or most no-fills I buy! My amigo no fill, derby house & weatherbeetas are all the same - take so much rain then soak right through even from brand new! I now have a 1200 denier amigo no fill which seems to be ok at the moment & a gallop high denier one too which I can recommend :)

Lightweight turnouts cause problems for me too. I've had 4 or 5 well known makes (inc Weatherbeeta which I normally like) and NONE have been waterproof.

By sheer fluke I bought a Shires Tempest Lite for my big horse last year (he was new in November, hence 4 new rugs purchased!) and it's been utterly brilliant, not a single leak. I then went and bought the same ones for my two mares this spring, and all three are still perfectly waterproof. They were only £28 brand new from ebay too.

Im a massive fan of Swish & Ruggles. Fit well, well made & brill quality. Definatley give big brands a run for there money!! Have better specs than lot of big branded stuff too : )
