My 2yo colt has gone for a simple op on his throat (was kicked as a foal and it fractured one of the cartilige rings which has healed funny and he has a 'pouch' which fills with air when he whinnies) will be operated on tomorrow morning. He'll probably be fine it's just me being a silly wreck about one of my 'babies' lol!
 
cheers guys. Did I say simple? It was far from simple, the injury was 1/2 way down his trachea and the air sac went to the bottom of his neck so he has a much larger wound than we thought, also the vet removed the sac as it was so large and had attached to his main vein, artery, the muscle on both sides of the neck and the aesophagus(sp?) and he's also got a drain in for the next 5 days or so. Poor thing.

Oh my goodness NG.........it just goes to show what you can find when looking a bit further. Sending lots of {{{HEALING VIBES}}} your way and hope he makes a speedy recovery. I am presuming that this will have no lasting effect for him?

Well he did say he'd be fine before, hasn't said any different I just presume it'll increase the healing time, luckily at 2 he won't be doing any hard work for a while so he wont need to withstand too higher pressures in his trachea till well after it's fully healed, he just needs to not whinny till it heals - that should be fun!

The vet seemed quite happy with it, said he'd never seen anything like it - nor had his colleages. He said he's going to blow it up and preserve it somehow, so people can get the full effect. He is expensive but an excellent surgeon.

I'm just glad it's over now and my boys ok. Prob be feeling very sorry for himself by thursday lol, will take him a treat to cheer him up.

Quick update, went to see him today, took a few carrotts which he muched greedily. He looks happy enough, just his usual self which pleased me, though did feel a twinge that he was happy there without me but guess thats just animals in general, food and love and they're happy. The vet nurse looking after him thinks he's ace and there's no other 'in-patients' so he gets lots of TLC!

The wound is about 2/3rds the length of his gullet, with a hole at the bottom for it to drain, the silly moose had pulled the drain out overnight so he's having it manually flushed now. They've evn covered his chest in vaseline to prevent him getting sores from the fluid draining.

Still can't wait to have him home though! lol
